In a semi-final game Friday,
the Cardinals downed the highly-ranked
Prairie City team, 83
74, in the best game of the dis
trict tournament for the lone
team.
The Redhirds had a good sec
ond quarter and took a 46-30
halftime lead over last year's
district etiamps, but the classy
Panthers were not to be easily
disposed of and came charging
l:nck with 30 points in the third
period, to bring the count to 64-
bu for lone.
In the end, free throws made
the difference with lone getting
23 as compared with Prairie
City's 15. Jim Swanson, who
scored 67 points in the tourna
ment, made 22 in this game. Pat
Voigt of the Panthers made 24,
but he had one less field goal
than Swanson. Frank Halvorsen
tallied 19 for the Cards for sec
ond high. The Panthers lost four
players on fouls in the rough
game and lone lost three, Hal
vorsen, Swanson, and Bob Ball.

after residents returned from
John Day on Sunday, tired and
a little sad that McEwen of
Athena defeated Ione's basket
ball team, 59 to 51. for first
place and the right to continue
in the state tournament. Howev
er, the basketball team and fel
low students came home with
many honors of which they can
be proud.
The lone High school students
were awarded the Carl Klieel
Sportsmanship trophy, which
was accepted by student body
president Eddie aherman.
Frank Halvorsen, Jim Swan
son and Eddie Sherman were
selected on the All -Star team;
I Jim Swanson was third highest
scorer and Frank Halvorsen
fourth highest among all tour
nament players.
