Traffic Safety
Commission Warns
Of Hydroplaning
Hydroplaning . . . skimming
along the surface ... is a de
sired thing in boating circles,
but on the highway it can
mean complete lass of control,
according to the Oregon Traffic
Safety Commission.
"All of a sudden there was
nothing to get hold of." In these
anguished terms, a driver des
cribed what happened moments
before his car skidded off a wet
road, plunged down an embank-
I ment ana overiurneu. upun m
' vestigation, the evidence pointed
' tn a hvrlrnnlanlne skid as the
cause of the accident.
The Commission notea roaay
that motorists should be famll-
o.- th tho nrinrinles of hy
droplaning and should consider
its inherent dangers as miuui
er important inducement to re
ciuwH whpn confronted
with certain driving conditions
on a wet hignway.
Hydroplaning can begin at
speeds above 30 miles per hour.
As acceleration is increased, a
film of water develops at the
point of contact which the tires
can no longer penetrate. When
this happens, the tires begin to
ride us or "plane" on this film,
in the way that skis "plane"
on a surface of water. At about
55 mph, the tires are totally
supported by the water, and
friction for braking or acceler
ating has disappeared.
Unfortunately for the individ
ual driver, the traffic safety
nnnnmi .nnptllHpH. there is HO
sure-fire method of avoiding a.
hdroplaning sKia. adoui tne
best general advice that can be
given is: in wet weather, slow
down below the hydroplaning
speed when approaching curves
or other changes in pitch or in
cline in the road. If hydroplan
ing should occur, decelerate
immediately, and wait for the
tires to regain traction. Stay off
the brakes! In the case of par
tial hydroplaning, correcting for
the individual type of skid may
bring the car under control.
