50 Shows Slated
At Umatilla Fair
On at Hermiston
The 19CS Umatilla County
Fair, scheduled for August 7-10
at the fairgrounds, liermlston.
officially otx-ned its gate at
8:00 a.m. Wednesday. A total
of 50 different shows. Including
ptoirams, events, and division
exhibit idsplays, are scheduled
(Hiring the four davs of annual
county fair activities. There
will be something to Interest
every man, woman, and child,
such as arts and crafts, a flower
show, farm machinery displays,
fine livestock, or entertainment
such as fair follies and carni
val attractions. Many youth
contests are on the agenda for
4-H youngsters and the Future
Farmers of America.
The evening of Wednesday,
August 7, featured the corona
tion progam during wnicn time
the fair court princess, who has
been selected for her coopera
tion, appearance, attitude, and
dependability, was crowned
queen of the 19G8 county fair.
Fair Follies, under the cap
able direction of Bryan Bran
stetter. will be held Thursday
evening at the high school sta
dium. Branstetter has a top
notch program arranged.
The third annual junior rodeo
events will come off in a mighty
burst of energy during the last
two evenings of the fair, Fri
day and Saturday. This pro
gram promises to be Jam-packed
with action.
The parade, under the direc
tion of Hennsiton Jaycees, is
scheduled to start at ten o'
clock Saturday morning. Release
time for livestock exhibits is set
for 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening.
All other exhibits may be check
ed out at 9:00 p.m. The fail
board reserves the right to
withhold payment of premium
money on any exhibit removed
from its place prior to author
ized release time.
Mrs. Wayne (Lot) Haxsln re
turned Sunday from Pendleton
Community hospital where she
spent about five days in trac
tion last week for relief of a
back ailment.
Neighborhood Center
Needs Story Tellers
Mrs. Patricia Brindle, coordin
ator of the Heppner Neighbor
hood Center, requests the need
for volunteer story tellers to
take part in weekly story tell
ing sessions for the youngsters
on Monday mornings at the
center.
Attendance on Monday, Aug
ust 5, totaled about 50 young
sters and indicates the interest
of the younger set in the week
ly sessions.
Volunteers who have been as
sisting will be leaving the area,
and Mrs. Brindle states that if
the story sessions are to con
tinue, additional helpers will
be needed.

tact the Heppner Neighborhood
Center, 676-5873.
Umatilla Parade
Entry Forms Here
Entry blanks for the Umatilla
County Fair parade, to be in
Hermiston on August 10, are
available in Heppner at the
Heppner Barber Shop, according
to Al Frost, parade chairman.
The parade will start at 10
a.m. on Main Street, Hermiston,
after leaving the fairgrounds on
Orchard Ave. at 9:15 a.m. As
sembly starts at 8 a.m.
Many prizes are offered for
floats, musical units, drill
teams, mounted entries, comic
entries and kids entries.
Those interested in entering
may pick up entry blanks at
the barber shop.
