Bid Opening Set
On Water Bonds

IRRIGON The end of a long
struggle to acquire a municipal
water system for the City of
Irrlgon appears to be near. A
call for bids for drilling of the
well is being advertised and rev
enue bonds are currently being
offered for sale to finance a
part of the project. A $26,700
Federal grant through Farmers
Home Administration will also
assist in defraying the cost.
The regular council meeting
on July 9 was set for opening
of bids on both well contract
and bonds and. according to
Mayor Chester Wilson, the drill
ing contract is scheduled to be
awarded the following week
with work to begin In 15 days.
Mrs. Marilyn Stewart, who was
named recorder pro tern in the
absence of Mrs. Creamer, will
receive bid documents for the
City.
Contracts for the distribution
system and well equipment will
be advertised and awarded la
ter in the season after a water
source is assured and well cost
has been determined. Location
of the well will be at 7th and
Oregon, where a ground-breaking
ceremony is being consid
ered for later in July.
Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Christ
iansen and family visited their
daughter and family, Mr. and
Mrs. Michael Creighton at Ba
ker. The Creightons twin babies,
buzan and Richard are to be in
the movie "Paint Your Wagon"
being lilmcd at this time on
East Eagle Creek northeast of
Baker. They are attended by a
registered nurse and transport
ed to and from the set by heli
copter.
Mr. and Mrs. Christian re
turned home via the John Day
country spending several days
camping and Darwin remained
in Baker for a visit with his
sister.
Llywellen C. Pearce, 77, fath
er of Mrs. Don Estes, passed
away last week. He is survived
by his wife, Florence, another
daughter, Mrs. Walter Harris, of
McMmnvllle, and lour grand
children. Mr. Pearce had work
ed for General Motors for many
years on the Oregon coast, as
well as at San Francisco. The
past 14 years he lived in Baker,
until he and his wife entered
the Delamarter Nursing Home,
Pendleton, rour months ago.
The congregation of the As
sembly of God and Baptist
churches met at the Baptist
church for the Sunday evening
service. The two churches meet
for a Joint service each "fifth
Sunday" of a month.
Gene Gollyhorn returned home
this week from attending an In
ternational Youth Congress in
Dallas, Texas. He went as an
Oregon delegate to the Congress
and was selected by the Irrigon
Lions Club which had been des
ignated by the Lions Internat
ional to make the selection. This
honor was tendered them be
cause they had doubled their
membership In the past year.
A family reunion was held at
the Elbert Eppenbach home on
Sunday. Mrs. Elnora Paxon
who is Mrs. Eppenbach's moth
er, recently returned from the
hospital and is much improved.
Most of her children were home
to see her. About 30 people

WAC, has been at the home of
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don
Estes, for a two week leave.
Miss Estes has been stationed
at Fort Monroe, Va., the past
two years, bhe has now receiv
ed orders to report to NATO
Headquarters Belgium for a two
year tour of duty.

for a 2-weeka vacation. They
visited a brother, Rev. Cecil

of God at Angels Camp. They
also visited the Havekosts' son,
Jack, and family at Vlsalla be
fore traveling on to their child
hood home In Avila Beach
where another brother and sis
ter live with their families.

the Bill Howard ranch drew a
good sized crowd. Refreshments

Irrigon Lions Club.

Mrs. Ernest Stephens.

for an extended tour of Kansas,
