Guests Entertained
At Club's Sweetheart
Dinner and Program
A highlight of this year's so
cial calendar for the Heppner
Mothers' club was the annual
Sweetheart Dinner, to which the
husbands of members were in
vited as honor guests. Places
were set for 32 persons in the
banquet room of the Wagon
Wheel Cafe on Saturday, Febru
ary 3, with decorations carry
ing out a red and white Valen
tine theme.
Two former members of the
club and their husbands were
welcomed, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer
Schmidt of Hermiston, and Mr.
and Mrs. Everett Struckmeier,
now of Arlington. New members
and their husbands who attend
ed were Mr. and Mrs. Forrest
Burkenbine and Mr. and Mrs.
Vern Keithley. Presiding during
Introductions was the club presi
dent, Mrs. Loren Lucore. A Val
entine door prize was presented
to Mrs. Eugene Winters.
After the dinner the group ad
journed to the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Lucore for the program.
Kirk Horn, biology Instructor,
presented a very informative
talk on bird and animal life In
Morrow county. A prologue of
colored museum slides was used
to show the evolution of birds
from the reptile kingdom into
various forms of birds that are
seen today. Development of rep
tile and dinosaur-type glyder and
bird-like characters with wings
provided the framework for mod
ern bird to build upon. Speci
mens of perfect fossils have help
ed provide the "missing link" to
directly associate the bird's an
cestors. "The egg (of the am
phibia) definately came before
the chicken," he emphasized in
tracing the background of the
beautiful birds which we now
enjoy in Morrow county.
He reviewed work of the Auto
bon Society and how many of his
high school students and others
in the county had cooperated in
the recent bird count in the
county. He had "captured" a
wide variety of the birds on
film and were found beautiful
in their natural habitat. He
spoke of the need for conser
vation practices .and protection
of birds in the county and the
great good which they do for
man. Several of the animals and
other wildlife which he has seen
on various field trips In the
county were also shown and dis
cussed. Varieties of homemade pies
were served at the close of the
evening by the hostesses, Mrs.
Lucore and Mrs. Bob Abrams.

NOTICE
In view of the circumstances that arc develop
ing in the campaign for the Morrow County
Sheriffs race it would appear that the police
department of the City of Heppner would do
well to accept applications for vacancies that
may develop as a result of local members of the
department having thrown their (two) hats in
the local political arena.
