On Grain Exports
More grain was exported
through the Ports of Portland
and Astoria In 19C7 than any
previous year.
Figures compiled by the Ore
gon Department of Agriculture's
grain division show Its inspect
ors checked a total of 3,299.971
tons of grain for export. Pre
vlous high year was 1906 when
2.910.802 tons were inspected for
export from these ports.
Grain received at these two
ports also topped the previous
year, but set no record. The 1967
figure was 3,607,469 tons. In
1966 it was 3,547,718 tons.
Grain Inspections are also
made by the department at Pen
dleton, Merrill and The Dalles.
At Pendleton Inspection activi
ties also set a record this year
with 69,927 tons of grain weigh
ed and inspected and an esti
mated 230,254 tons Inspected
and diverted.

New rules and regulations
governing child labor are now

Under the new rules, which
went into effect January 1, 16
occupations in sericulture have
been declared hazardous to
children under 16 years of age.
Among the occupations listed
are: handling or chemical pest
Icides, handling explosives, scr
vine as a flagman for aircraft
serving as a truck or bus driver
on public roads, operating a
tractor of over 20-belt horsepow
er, operating a power-ariven
Dost-hole digger, operating a
power-driven saw, working from
ladder or scanoid at a neigni
of over 20 feet, and working in
a pen, yard or stall containing
a dairy bull, boar, or stud horse.
The ban also includes operat
ing, feeding or unclogglng pow
er-driven balers, grinders, chap-
pers, soil fillers, roughage blow
ers, auger conveyers and com
bines.
