Students Again Convey Christmas Spirit
With Drawings Sponsored by Local Businesses
By WES SHERMAN
Perhaps the spirit of Christ
mas is best reflected through
the sentiments and expressions
of children.
This is apparent again this
year as pupils of the Heppner
Elementary school once more
have drawn their conceptions of
the holiday season for the
Christmas issue of The Gazette
Times. Through the excellent cooper
ation of Terry Lincecum, nrt
teacher, the pupils have devoted
some ol tneir oass mm.- m
drawing appropriate pictures for
greetings that are sponsored by
different businesses.
This was done here for the
first time last year, and the re
sponse from the public showed
that all appreciated and enjoy
ed the work of the youngsters.
Their imagination and talents
have a way of expressing the
Christmas spirit in simple, dir
ect and honest manner. Some
of these expressions are novel.
Perhaps they picture Santa
Claus riding in a super-jet
sleigh. Perhaps they envision
the Christmas spirit through a
picture pointing out kindness to
animals. Many, of course, re
flect the religious motive as
they draw angels, the baby
Jesus, manger scenes and oth
ers. Their work is the more force
ful and striking because it is
unsophisticated. This, perhaps,
is what elicits the sympathetic
response from the public.
Business people indicated last
year that they liked to express
their season's greetings through
the work of the youngsters, and
even more of them than Inst
year are sponsoring the greet
ings. Many Could Not Be UeC
Unfortunately, out of the sev
eral hundred pictures drawn,
only a relatively few could be
used, for there are many more
children than businesses. This
does not mean that some of
those not selected by the busi
nesses were not as well done.
Many outstanding pictures were
drawn which could not be printed.
It Is unfortunate that every
reader cannot see all the work
done by the pupils, for all
would have an enjoyable time
looking at them.
Another regret, too, is that the
art work of the smaller young
sters has less chance of publi
cation because their little hands
have not yet learned to write
and draw smaller letters and
characters. Thus, the smaller
the child, the larger the picture.
Lack of space and the cost of
printing the larger greetings
thereby cuts the number of
those of the smaller youngsters
hat could be used.
Good Work Apparent
It is evident, though, that
Miss Lincecum and her pupils
are doing fine work in their art
classes. This will be apparent
to those who enjoy going
through this "greeting card"
section and studying the Christ
mas sentiments of the young
sters. Some are humorous, and
some are serious.
It will also be noted that the
keen eyes of the children notice
things around town in connec-

tion with Christmas that par
ents and townspeople do not re
alize they notice. One, for in

ton are expressing their senti
ments in wishing the best of the
season to all and in saying
"thank you" to their customers
and friends. Some use the pa
per to reach the public instead
of sending Christmas cards to
them.
The Gazette-Times is able to
use the children's art work by
using its Fairchild Scan-A-Gra-ver
to make plastic engravings
from their drawings. While the
drawings may lose some of their
quality in the reproduction, they
are true copies of the originals.
Some of the drawings had to be
cut down to be used, and some
had to be engraved in two sec
tions because of their size.
To Get Certificate
All children whose pictures
are used in the paper will re
ceive a certificate from The Gazette-Times
and the merchants
for their help.
The cooperative project en
courages and recognizes the
work of the youngsters, giving
them an Incentive for their
class work, and the local busi
nesses appreciate their helpful
ness in expressing the spirit of
the season.
With these words, we point
out that this Christmas issue of
the Gazette-Times is the 1967
"Greeting Card" from the mer
chants, children and the paper
to the Morrow county commu
nity and all readers everywhere.
All join in expressing best
wishes of the season to others,
and if this issue helps to bring
joy to readers and enhances the
spirit of the season, all who
have made it possible will be
happy indeed.
