Answers Given
On Questions
About Welfare
Following Is a column from
the State Public Welfare Com
mission that answers some of
the questions frequently asked
about welfare. The Morrow
county welfare office reports
that these questions are asked
many times here, and the col
umn is printed as a public ser
vice. , .
Recently my social security
increased, but my welfare check
was less. Why?
Public welfare is based on
your need. The amount of your
welfare check is arrived at by
adding the amounts we can al
low for all items of need and
subtracting all availabe income.
If your total needs remain the
same, your welfare check will
therefore be less if you have
other income with which to
meet these needs.
I beard public welfare would
pay other agencies to take care
of certain children. Why can't
public welfare foster homes be
used?
When a child for whom pub
lic welfare is responsible has
special problems that public
welfare itself does not have fa
cilities to treat, public welfare
can purchase care for the child
from a private child-caring
agency or Institution, if the
latter has facilities appropriate
to the needs of the particular
child. Public welfare does use
foster homes for the great ma
jority of children who require
care away from their own par
ents. Why do you assist people who
can afford to drive cars?
Many people need an automo
bile to look for work or to get
to and from work, particularly
if their normal occupation in
volves any amount of traveling
or carrying of tools. Some aged
and. disabled people need cars
to get to and from the grocery
store or the doctor's office. Own
ing a car does not disqualify
people for public assistance un
less their total assets, including
the value of the car, plus any
other personal property includ
Inc cash on hand, do not add
up to more than $1000 for a
single person or $1250 for a
couple.
Does welfare pay for babysit'
tors when mothers work?
If a mother's earnings are not
