"World of Opportunity" offers
an appropriate theme for this
year's observance, as 4-H Club
work continues to gain momen
tum throughout the world. Sixty
countries now have 4-H or sim
ilar programs, and in Oregon,
according to a mid-year report,
4-H membership reached a new
high with 36,548 boys and girls
participating.
National 4-H Week serves as
a springboard, initiating the
4-H year. It gives youngsters a
chance to enroll in project work
of their choice and sets the
stage for upcoming 4-H pro
grams. Cal Monroe, state 4-H exten
sion agent, said an additional
2,150 boys and girls were added
to Oregon 4-H pro.icets this year.
Major gains in the past year,
he said, were in horse projects,
junior leadership and health.
Also showing appreciable
gains were dog, rabbit, flower
growing, vegetable gardening,
archery, gun safety, electricity,
woodworking, empire builders,
food preparation and home im
provement projects.
A new 4-H TV Action Club
will beam a series of television
programs on emergency prepar
edness to many Oregon young
sters who might not otherwise
be able to participate in such
a project. .
Of particular interest in the
upcoming 4-H year is the Out
doorsman project. It is an intro
ductory project in the natural
science area of 4-H Club work.
It is designed for junior 4-H
members in the 9 to 12 year
age bracket, and for those who
prefer a general project to a
specific one such as entomolo
gy, forestry, geology or one of
the wildlife projects.
Hikes and field trips are a
major part of the Outdoorsman
Dog Obedience Club
Gains in Popularity
A 4-H project gaining in pop
ularity in the state and new to
Morrow county this year is the
4-H Dog Obedience. Under the
capable guidance of Mrs. Bon
nie Clow as leader, this small
club of five members made re
markable progress. Dogs were
taught to obey such commands
as heel, sit, down, and stay.
Those in attendance at the 4-H
Style Revue at county fair got
a preview of what these young
sters and their dogs have start
ed. Mrs. Clow is ready to start
the new 4-H year and is looking
for more members.

On many of the field trips a

naturalist, science teacher or
other experienced person may
accompany the group.
