Grange hall, starting at 6:30

The visitors were met In Port
land by Mr. and Mm. Fred Man
kin, their hosts while here. Mr.
Worlev and Miss Ivora Worley
are nephew and niece of Fred
Mankin and Homer Mankin of

They enjoyed much of the
Oregon scenery while here, vis
iting Wallowa Lake and accom
panying their hosts to Lincoln
City, going to the coast by wav
of the Santiam Pass. They left
by Jet from Portland on July
19 for their return trip.
On Saturday evening, July 13,
the visitors were dinner guests

Legion Convention
Stirs Delegates
At Eugene Sessions
Support of the true Kplrlt of

many ways at the annual atate
American l-ctflon Convention
held July U 15 In Eugene, ac
cording to Mm. Frank Hamlin,
delegate of the Heppner Auxil
iary Unit who attended the four
day sessions. Guest speakers and
general discussion stressed in
creasing need for dedicated sup
port of the Legion goals.
Mm. Hamlin was one of about
500 auxiliary women who at
tended the 4!)th annual conven
tion at the Lane county fair
grounds. Special auxl 1 1 a r y
guests Included two past na
tional presidents, Mm. Hubert
Goods of Portland and Mm.
Henry Ahnemlller of Wcnat
chee, Wash., and also Mm. Del
Uurnell of Wapato, Wn, depart
ment president.
Auxiliary delegates partici
pated In the presentation of col
ors with more than 50 flags at
the opening sessions Wednes
day evening, July 12. Colore
from units throughout the states
were Included In the convention
hall display.
Highlight of the July 13 morn
ing sessions was the keynote
address by Governor Tom Mc
Call, who appeared In-fore the
K) delegates In support of
America's fighting men In Viet
nam and "their commander In
chief," and paid tribute to Leg
Ion programs now In effect In
Oregon.
Auxiliary business sessions,
which Included reports by de
partment officers, credentials
committee, reading of rules and
resolutions committee, were
heard In the Thursday afternoon
session. Girls' State Governor
Heidi Harrison of the Salem Un

Legion for the coming year are

Friday and Saturday mornings.
In state drum and bugle corps
competition Friday evening the
Royal Lancers of Portland de
fended their title against seven
competing corps.
Texas Family Spends
Vacation Here, Enjoys
Visits With Relatives
Mr. and Mrs. II. B. Henry
(Clarissa Hastings) and two
children, Hank, 6, and Joyce, 3,
of Snn Antonio, Texas, visited
In Heppner and Forest Grove
recently with her parents, Mr.
nnd Mrs. W. C. Hastings, and
other friends and relatives.
Flying to Portland by way of
Dallas, the family was met at
the Portland airport by Mr. and
Mrs. Hastings and all spent the
week-end visiting with Mr. and
Mrs. Roger Connor and family
In Forest Grove. Mrs. Connor is
also a daughter of the Hastings.
On Sunday, July 9, a family
picnic and barbecue at the Con
nor home for friends and rela
tives from the Portland area in
cluded Zetta Jenkinson, Vancou
ver, Wn.; Gladys Carglll, Marie
Johnson and Rita Dell Greenup
and two children, all of Port
land. On the following week-end
after a visit in Heppner, the
Hastings and Henrys camped at
Bull Prairie Reservoir fishing
and enjoying the mountains,
before the Hastings returnde to
the level countryside of their
part of Texas.
On Thursday, July 20, the
Henrys departed by plane for
Texas and arrived home before
their Heppner family reached
Heppner from Portland.

Barratts Have Short
Visit Here, Return
Home for Surgery
The annual summer visit of
Mr. and Mm. Garnet Barratt of
Mesa, Ariz., with their Heppner
friends was limited to the first
week In July. After attending
the wedding of their grand
daughter, Miss Vickie Barratt to
Kenneth Vernon Moland In Spo
kane, Wn., on July 1, they came
to Pendleton by plane and were
met by their hosts for the week,
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hamlin.
On Monday evening, July 3,
the Hamllna entertained at a
patio dinner for Mr. and Mm.
Barratt, Joined by Mr. and Mrs.
Haiph Thompson and Mr. and
Mrs. Winn Crist. They also
sent a short time with the
Hamlins at their mountain cab
In at Parkers Mill. They return
ed home by plane on July 8.
On Tuesday, July 11, Mr. Bar
ratt underwent major surgery
at the South Side Hospital in
Mesa. In telephone conversa
tion with Mm, Barratt on Sun
day, Mrs. Hamlin reports that
he Is making good recovery, but
will be hospitalized there for
another week.

Litchfield to Train
At San Bernardino
Dr. and Mm. Ralph Litchfield
visited for a few days last week
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Wright, while en route
to California. They came by way
of the Alcan highway from
Anchorage, Alaska, where he
had been stationed at Ellendorf
hospital on the air force base
the past two years.
Dr. Litchfield will report July
31 to take his residency train
ing for general practice at the
San Bernardino Countv hospital
for the coming two years, they
reported enjoying their assign'

Heppner friends who are now
living in the Anchorage area.

Guests at Rood Home
Mrs. Pat Watson and (laugh
ter Alicia returned to their home
in Medford on Friday after
spending several days here as
house guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Jerry Rood and daughter Dee-
dee. They were former residents
of Klnzua, when the Roods also
lived there.
Mrs. Watson, on vacation from
her work In the Jackson county
clerk's office, enjoyed a tour
through the Morrow county
courthouse and was impressed
by the modern photostatic
