Morse Seeks Funds
lo Fight Erosion
Senator Wayne Morse, D-Ore.,
today asked for $5 million to
fight erosion problems on west
ern watershed lands managed
by the Bureau of Land Manage
ment In a letter to President John
son, Morse noted that the BLM
has accepted bids totaling more
than $500 million for oil drill
ing rights on the outer conti
nental shelf.
He urged the President to ask
for a budget increase for BLM
for fiscal 1969 of one per rent
of the bonus bids for the oil
rights.
Morse said the BLM manages
almost 470 million acres of pub
lic land, more federal lands
than all the other government
agencies combined, and "year
after year it earns far more
monev than its budget."
Morse said the land is vital
to the west, and much of it is
in critical condition. He said
some of the profits from our
public lands should be reinvest
ed in their conservation.
Morse was Joined by 13 other
western senators in sending the
letter to President Johnson.
