said that the season Is going
very well. First half of play ends
on June 10.

Students Scour
City in Cleanup
Heppner High school students
scoured the city Friday afternoon
In cleanup "blitz" conducted
from 1 p.m. until 3:15.
They hauled many pickup
loads of trash to the city dump,
after picking up the discarded
material from walks and curbs
where residents had left It for
them.. They also picked up lit
ter and trash from streets and
vacant lots, extending from the
high school grounds to the fair
grounds and all over the city
proper.
Sophomores were Judged win
ners of the Inter-class competit
ion. Freshmen had the Job of clean
ing the area around the high
tehool and Principal Dick Carp
inter said that they did an ex
cellent Job.
The other three classes divid
ed the city Into sections, each
taking one portion.
Carpenter said that the stu
dents seemed to do a good Job
of the cleanup, but he added
that he was not satisfied with
the performance of a few of the
students who did not stick to the
Job throughout the time. All
teachers participated In a super
visory capacity.
The principal says that he and
members of the faculty will
evaluate the cleanup program
nid will have some recommen
dations and changes In organi
zation to offer for next spring's
program.
The students had lunch at
school before engaging In the
cleanup, then returned to school
at 3:15 for refreshments. Pop
was furnished with the compli
ments or the Chamber of Commerce,

From Tour of Duty
Yn2 Bob Irby Is here for a
visit with Mr. and Mrs. Glenn
Irby following a year In Viet
nam. Irby, although a Navy
man, served In the Headquart
ers Military Assistance Com
mand In the office of the assis
tant chief of staff to General
Westmoreland In Saigon.
Yeoman Irby was a graduate
of Heppner High school In the
class of 1902, attended business
school In Portland and worked
and went to school In California
before enlisting In the Navy. He
will have a month's leave be
fore returning to active duty at
Alameda near San Diego.
Bob managed to arrive In
Heppner In time to see his older
brother. Bill, and family, who
were also here for a short visit
with Mr. and Mrs. Irby. The Bill
Irbys live In Truckee, Calif.,
and were In Heppner from May
7 until May 19.

Mrs. Jesse Beardsley, former
Heppner resident. She has been
confined to bed the past five
months following a serious
heart attack In December, but
extends her greetings to her
lieppner menus. She resides at
the Village Nursing Home, 3955

Gresham.
