Riverside High's football team
was 13 points in front with Just
one quarter of playing time be
tween them and a state 8-man
B football championship at
Boardman Saturday afternoon.
But the Fossil Falcons fought
from behind to gain a 2t5-2ti tie,
and the two teams thereby share
the 17 championship.
Even without a clearcut de
cision for either, it was a great
showing for both teams, adding
brilliant chapters to their ath
letic histories.
An intercepted pass that came
late in the final quarter when
it appeared Riverside might be
headed for a game-clinching
touchdown brought the dead
lock. The Pirates had moved to
the Falcons' IS. suffered a pen
alty and then Chet Phillips at
tempted a pass that resulted in
an interception bv dene Hum
phrey who ran t!J yards to score.
Fossil then lost a chance to win
when the run for the extra point
tailed to roach the end one.
A pass play from Mickey
Wright to Duane Kandel. good
for yards, came earlier in
l he period for the Falcons.
Riverside had gained a quick
edge- in the game when Phil
lips hit Bob McRae on a 1.1
ard pass play. The extra oint
try failed. Fossil countered with
a touchdown on a 4V yard run
bv Steve Benson. Its point try. i
too, failed.
The Pirates moved to a 19 6
lead on two 2S-yard .scoring
pass plays one to" Gary Baird
and one to McRae. Baird ran
one of the points. However, the
Falcons brought their total to
13 by halftime when Benson
grabbed a short pass from
Wright and ran 90 yards to
score. Wright ran the convers
ion point.
Riverside's Phillips sneaked
over from the one-yard line in
the third quarter and Mike Part
low ran the point to bring the
total to 26-13 until the Falcons'
concluding touchdowns in the
last period brought the stand
off. Riverside led in first downs,
13 to 10; and topped yardage
statistics with 4M to 413 for
Fossil.
Each team will receive first
place trophies, since a cham
pionship game cannot be de
termined on st at 1st tea other than
scoring. For Riverside this was
two tl in a row, since the Pir
ates battled to a 20-20 dead
lock with Burnt River the week
earlier, gaining the right to en
ter the finals on a statistical
edge.

It was hard to estimate the
number of children who greet
ed Santa Claus, but Henry said
that out of 400 candy treats, he
had 25 left over following his
appearance. Again came the
persistent rumor that Santa
had a striking resemblance to
Al Boschee.
