Snow is Needed
For Water Supply
No one looks forward to a
hard winter, but It will take
above average snowfalls In Ore
gon this season to provide ade
quate irrigation supplies for the
1967 growing season.
Mrs. Elvera Horrell, Oregon
State University Extension ag
ricultural economist said that
although precipitation was near
normal in Western uregon ana
the Cascades during the year
ending September 1, it was on
ly about half of normal in
Eastern Oregon. Old timers In
some areas likened the dry sit
uation to the drought years of
the 1930's, she said.
U. SL Soil Conservation Serv
ice reports show that more than
a third of the reservoirs had
little or no carryover at the end
of the season and about half
closed with a carryover of about
80 per cent of average.
Mrs. Horreu said iacK oi
moisture caused fall grain seed
ing to run behind schedule in
Dortions of the Columbia Bas
in. UUIiam, umaiiaa, anerman
and southern Morrow counties
are particularly dry, she noted.
Elsewhere in the state, fall
praln seedinz was well along
by the end of the last week of
October. The economist also
noted that range feed condit
ions improved in September,
but are still far below last year
and the average for this date.
