The club will serve its an
nual Turkev Dinner on Satur
day. November 5, at the lOOF
hall in Lexington. For this pur
pose, it was voted to purchase
a new gas range for the kitch
en. A social evening of cards
and bingo will flolow the din
ner, and proceeds will be used
to remodel the hall dining
rooms.

Mrs. Alonzo Henderson. Mrs.

Executive board of the lone
Garden Club met at the home
of Mrs. Jim Johnson on Mon
day to draw up the schedule
for the second annual Christmas
Show. It will be held In the Gil
liam and Bisbee building, Hepp
ner, the week-end of December
9 and 10. Judging will be on
the 9th by accredited Judges.
Newt O'Harra had as his
week-end visitors his son and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Jack O'
Harra" of Portland, and Mrs. Pat
ricia Darnielle and Karen. They
joined together in celebrating
Mr. O'Harra's birthday on Sun
day. Several from the area attend
ed the Ladies Auxiliary of Pat
riarch's Militant meeting in
Pendleton last Wednesday even
ing. Mrs. Archie Munkers was
accepted as a new member.
Those attending were Mrs. A. J.
Majeske, Mrs. Florence McMil
lan, Mrs. Munkers, Mrs. Pete
McMurtry of Heppner, and Mrs.
Alonzo Henderson of Hood Riv-er.

Marine Lance Corporal Fran
cis D. Robinson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Francis H. Robinson of
Lexington, is a member of the
Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth
Marines, which is manning de
fensive positions ten miles
southwest of Da Nang.
The new battalion is a unit
of the recently formed Fifth
Marine Division.
Shortly after a bill was pass
ed in Congress authorizing
another Marine Division, the
Twenty-Sixth Regiment formed
and began training at Camp
Pendleton, Calif. All training
was slanted toward the Vietnam
war situation. Demolitions and
mine warfare booby traps,
counter guerilla warfare, and
small unit jungle tactics were
stressed.

Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Hyatt of

Walt Campbell of Roach, Mo.,
and Mrs. W. R. Worlein of Port
land. Hunting guests over the week
end at the Derral Bird home
were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bird
and Bud Combs of Prinevllle.
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Harrison
and children Chris and Kellle
of Idaho Falls, Idaho, visited
from Friday until Tuesday with
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hines and
Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Harrison of
Fossil. They were accompanied
by Jack Baird, also of Idaho
Falls.
Horace Smiley of Hood River
visited friends here Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. David Mattison
were in Pendleton Saturday to
visit with Mrs. Mattison's bro
ther. Bob Hire, who was recup
erating from surgery at St. An
thony hospital.

ical care for Mrs. Norris.

nounce the arrival of a daugh
ter, Trina Dawn, born October
9 at the Pioneer Memorial hos
pital in Heppner. She weighed
8 lb., 6 oz., and Joins a sister
Leslie and brothers Craige and
Timmy. Grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Mark Jordan of Mitch
ell and Mr. and Mrs. James
Billings of Myrtle Creek. Mrs.
Jordan came from Mitchell to
help out from the 9th to the
12th and Mrs. Billings and
Linda came on the 12th and

they're lighting cancer with the American Cancer Society. Nick
Ictus has recently accepted the poet of volunteer notional golf
chairman for the ACS. Gargan. former screen and stage star,
is a victim of cancer and a tireless speaker for the Society.
Nicklcrui appeared in the Portland Open golf tournament at
Columbia-Edgewater Country Club. Gargan spoke at the Pacif
ic Northwest Occupational Health conference last week at the
Sheraton.
Round Survives Airplane Crash

MONUMENT A former Mon
ument man, Mel Round, now of
Idanha, escaped Injury, but his
plane was demolished in a
forced landing on Highway 22,
four miles from his home Sunday,
October 2.
He operates Round Trucking
Company there, and has been c
student pilot. His plane engine
failed while he was flying over
Mt. Jetferson about 1 p.m., at
about 9.200 ft. elevation. The
engine quit and after two diving
attempts to get it started failed,
he glided the plane through the
clouds, saw the highway and
made his landing.
State Police Officer Dryman
reported that Round made a good
landing, but his wing tip hit a
tree and flipped the plane
into the trees. Round was wear
ing a seat belt, was uninjured
and walked away from the pl
ane
He had been in Monument over
the week end hunting with his
father, Ed Round, and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Dean Mann and
children of Brightwood came Oct
ober 8 to bring her mother, Mrs.
Irene Forrest home, after she
had visited with them the past
five weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Harris of
Portland have been visiting and
stayed through the 16th.

went to Spokane Friday even
ing to spend the week-end vis

The Friendship Club was en

the school with Doris Stubble

Rose Merry Nelson and Pat Mc

Leland Stewart of Eugene vis
ited old friends October 8 while
on a hunting trip. He used to
live here when a mill was runn
ing on the river on the Neal
Ranch.
Word was received that Barb
ara "Biddie" Bixler, former res
ident of Monument .Long Creek
and John Day, died October 9 in
Portland where she had lived
since before her husband, Jack
Bixler preceded her in death.
They lived at 815 S. E- Wash
ington Street. Services were in
Portland. She Is survived by a
brother in the East.
