Legislature's Tax
Duty Said 'Clear'
Representative Irvin Mann
(R), Stanfield, told the Legis
lative Tax Study Committee in
Pendleton the Supreme Court
decision removing the 1V4
limitation from the November
ballot did not alter the duty
of the 1967 legislature to "sub
stantially and fairly" reduce
property taxes with a new
source of general fund revenue.
Noting that any new tax
measure faces a referendum,
Mann said he felt that if pub
lic opinion were probed by the
committee, it would be found
that the people would accept a
sales tax if they had assurance
it would result in substantial
property tax reduction.
Attends Convention
Dr. A. D. McMurdo left Tues
day for Portland to attend a
convention of the Oregon State
Medical association there. Mrs.
McMurdo left the previous day
for Portland. They expect to re
main until Friday, and their
son, Ted McMurdo, will return
to Heppner with them in order
to go hunting with his father
Saturday morning.
