Fine weather and a newly
painted outtield fence greeted
eager baseball players when the
Willow Creek Little League
started off its season Saturday.
The Braves and the Indians
claimed wins, with the B.P.O.E.
team coming from behind in the
last inning for a 13-11 victory
over the Dodgers and the
M.C.G.G. squad blasting Coach
Tom Hughes' Giants, 13-1, in the
second game. Monday night the
Dodgers pulled away from the
Braves after a 10-10 tie to gain
revenge with an 1815 win.
In Saturday's first game, the
Dodgers, behind the pitching of
southpaw Robin Duffy, exploded
for a seven-run second inning
but the Braves pulled ahead in
the top of the sixth and Coach
Dave McLeod's IOOF-sponsored
team could not score in their
Jast time at bat.
Duffy had nine strikeouts but
he could not hold the Braves in
the last frame as they tallied
six big runs. Gary Watkins and
Steve Rhea shared the hurling
duties for the red-clad BPOE
club with Rhea getting the win.
Kenny Baker had 2-for-4 at the
plate for the Dodgers while
Rory Stillman paced the Bravesi
at the plate with a 2-for-4 day.
Terry Cannon chucked the In
dians to the win in the second
contest as he struck out 16
Giants in the process. Tom
Hughes fanned seven Indian
batsmen but the MCGG team's
bats boomed as they collected
their first win.
Monday night's contest saw
the Dodgers collect eight runs
in the final inning to turn the
tide for the win after a 10-10
standoff in the fifth frame. The
best the Braves could manage
was five tallies in their half but
they weren't enough. Kenny
Baker led the Dodgers to the
18-15 win at the plate with a
3-for-5 performance while Steve
T?hoa wpnt 2-for-4 for the Braves.
Gary Watkins smacked a homer
for the Braves in the fourth.
Grange to Entertain
Miss Nellie Van Calcar, re
cently returned International
Farm Youth Exchange delegate
to Jamaica, will be a special
guest at the regular meeting of
Rhea Creek Grange Friday even
ing, May 14. A potluck dinner
will start at 6:30, honoring the
Nels Anderson family. All mem
bers are urged to attend.
Competing without three top
runners. the Heppner High
track team came on strong in
their usually weak events to
take a dual meet from the Sher
man High tracksters here Satur
day. 73 to 58. The Mustangs
were without the services of ace
runners Mark Brown. Tim Dris
coll. and John Wagenblast. all
of whom traveled to Pendleton
to participate in the Elks' Invi
tational there. Driscoll set a new
school mark in the 8S0 at Pen
dleton with a 1:59.3 time, plac
ing third in the event, and
Brown eclipsed the HHS two
mile record with a 10:32.3 clock
ing. The Mustangs who stayed at
home turned in a fine show with
some Heppner toys running
events for the first time. Earl
Perkins finished third in the
mile and Dave Clark got a
white ribbon in the two-mile
and in each case it was the first
time in the event for the boy.
The 100-yard dash and the
220. usually weak events for
Heppner, provided 16 points with
1-2 finishes bv Mustangs and
the mile and 880-yard runs feat
ured sweeps by Heppner for 18
more points.
Nc one individual figured
greatly in the Mustang victory
as everyone chipped in. Jim Ja
cobs was probably the leader
for the Mustangs with two first
places while Ray Eakin was a
triple winner for the Huskies.
