swimming In advance of va
cation and beach trips are sug
gested by an Oregon State Unl-
ersity recreation leader as a
means of "life saving."
It Is estimated that some 7000
persons will drown this summer
nd it is certain that this terrible
toll could be drastically reduced
witn more attention to water
safety, says Edward J. Slezak,
chairman of recreation in the
OSU division of physical educa
tion. .
Parents are urged to talk over
water safety with their children.
Caution can keep out tragedy,
ne reminds.
Here are Slezak's safe-swimm
ing rules:
Never swim alone.
Enter the water gradually and
never turn your back to surf
waters.
Swim only In guarded or safe
areas.
Refrain from swimming too
soon after meals.
Observe all beach and pool
rules.
Have a boat and two good
swimmers escort you on long
swims.
Never call for help unless
needed.
Listen to Instructions from
pool and beach guards or lake
directors.
Slezak adds one caution for
boaters: "Never overload boats
or canoes and always wear life

had the misfortune to wreck her
car. However, not too much dam
age was done to tho car. Mrs.
Ruhl was only shaken up a bit
in the accident.
