Maranathas Hear Talk
On Missionary Work

IONE Maranatha club of
lone United Church of Christ
held its February meeting at the
home of Mrs. Omar Rietmann
with the president, Mrs. Kenneth
Smouse, presiding. Mrs. Walter
Crowell conducted the devotional
services, using as her theme
"Witnessing in Daily Work and
Prayer."
A program on India was es
pecially interesting, with Rev.
Crowell showing slides made in
India. Mrs. Crowell accompan
ied the pictures with timely lec
ture and comments.
A letter of appreciation and
thanks was read from Pacific
University at Forest Grove ack
nowledging the gifts of linens
received from the lone club.
These included boys and girls
pajamas, pillow cases, sheets,
and other articles needed in the
infirmary.
A clothing drive will be held
again in the fall to be used for
missions both at home and
abroad. Now is a good time to
sort your clothing, have it clean
ed, and packed.
The lone Lions club is spon
soring a basketball game be
tween the lone Town Team and
the Blue Mountain College on
Wednesday, March 4, at 7:30
P. M. at the lone High school
gym. The games will be pre
ceded by an intramural grade
school basketball game at 6:30
p.m. All proceeds will go to the
lone school band uniform fund.
Concessions will be sold and
band members are asked to
bring cakes to be sold.
Mrs. Harold Sherer entertain
ed with a birthday coffee party
in honor of her daughter-in-law,
Mrs. Dick Sherer, on Monday
afternoon. Guests were Mrs.
Ray Heimbigner, Mrs. Marion
Palmer, Mrs. Cleo Childers and
family, and Mrs. Lee Palmer and
family.
Mrs. Alfred Nelson, Jr., un
derwent major surgery on her
back at Pendleton Community
hospital on Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Martin
drove to Portland and Corvallis
over the week-end. They were
accompanied as far as Portland
by Kenneth and Dale Lundell,
who took a plane to their homes
in California.
Miss Marilyn Morgan spent
the week-end here with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Mor
gan. She returned on Sunday to
Portland.
Bill Gslinas returned on Tues
day from a business trip to Port
land. He brought Scott Crabtree
back with him for a visit with
his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Leo Crabtree.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Crawford
and boys spent the week-end
here. They have just recently
moved into a new home in north
east Portland. Mr. and Mrs.
Wally Gaarsland attended a
house warming last week-end at
the Crawford home.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Newlin
of Seattle were guests of his
aunt, Mrs. J. P. O'Meara, from
Friday until Sunday morning.
Roland Ekstrom of Boise Jun
ior college spent the week-end
here with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Herbert Ekstrom, Sr.
Rev. and Mrs. Walter Crowell
left on Monday for Portland for
a few days.

left for Portland Saturday even
ing, where Judy attended a hair
styling show on Sunday and
Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Connor,
Lee and Terry spent the week
end in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. James Barnett
and family spent Sunday in The
Dalles visiting Mrs. Ray Kinder
who has been seriously ill. Mrs.
Kinder is the former Barbara
Jackson of lone.
Church Has Family Night
Family night was enjoyed at
Valby Lutheran church on Sun
day evening. Following dinner
a Walt Disney movie, "Nature's
Half Acre" was shown. Hosts for
the evening were Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Tews, Mr. and Mrs. Ray
mond Lundell, and Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Beckett.
Visiting at the home of Mrs.
Leona Jackson and Mrs. Doris
Gollyhorn on Sunday were Mr.
and Mrs. Ted Bennett of Arling
ton. Mrs. Bennett is Mrs. Jack
son's niece.
Eastern Star Social club will
meet at the home of Mrs. James
Barnett on Wednesday afternoon,

Girl Born to Dick Ekstroms
Friends here were pleased to
hear of the birth of a baby
daughter on February 20 to Mr.
and Mrs. Dick Ekstrom at Wen
atchee, Wn. She weighed 8 lbs.,
6 oz. and has been named Karen
Rae. The baby has one sister,
Vicky. Grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Herbert Eksrtom, Sr., Mrs.
Ida Coleman of lone, and great
grandparents are Mrs. Lester
Wilkins of Albany and M. E.
McClain of Portland. Mrs. Ek
strom went up on Sunday to
spend the week with the family.
Jo Swales of Stanf ield spent
Friday night and Saturday with
her friend, Barbara Bishop.
Mrs. Roland Bergstrom, who
recently underwent major surg
ery at Emanuel hospital in Port
land, came home on Sunday.
After spending a couple of days
in The Dalles, she was brought
home by her aunt, Mrs. Wayne
Weeks, who will remain at the
Bergstrom home for a while.
Gerry and Geneva Rickel of
Pasco will begin dance classes
for beginners and advanced
classes on February 29 at 8:00
and 9:00 p.m. at the Legion hall.
The dancing Is sponsored by the
lone Dance club and everyone
is welcome to attend. Lessons
will include movements in
waltz, samba, swing, fox trot,
cha cha, and bossa nova.
Leo Crabtree and daughter,
Mrs. Alvin McCabe, drove to
Pendleton Friday to meet Mr.
McCabe, who came down from
Colfax, Wn to join his family,
who have been visiting here.
They attended the Elks Annual
on Saturday night and returned
home Sunday.
Another visitor at the Crab
tree home was Barbara Erick
son of Burns, small daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Erickson, who
spent the week-end in Heppner
and attended the Elks Annual.
Mrs. Elmer Griffith returned
on Thursday from a three-week
stay in Lake Oswego at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Dwight
Haugen, and family. The Haug
ens returned on Monday even
ing from a trip to Mexico.
Dinner To Honor Church Teachers
A family night potluck sup
per will be held at 5:30 p.m.
on Sunday, March 1, at the
United Church of Christ spon
sored by the deaconesses. The
event is to honor all church
school teachers and workers.
Miss Ruth Bailey, conference
director of Christian education,
will provide a very interesting
program of slides from Hawaii.
Mr. and Mrs. Harland Lundell
of Boise, Idaho, returned to their
home on Friday, after spending
a week here following the death
of his father, O. L. Lundell.
Mr. and Mrs. Art Schimcke and
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Michaelsen
and Dean and Margaret Ann of
Odessa, Wn. were guests of Mr.
and Mrs. Ray Heimbigner over
the week-end. The ladies are sis
ters of Mrs. Heimbigner.
The Dealin' Dozen met at tha
home of Mrs. Cleo Childers last
Tuesday evening. Mrs. Kenneth
Howard won first prize and Mrs.
Dick Sherer won second high.
Guests present were Mrs. Roy
Goodrow and Mrs. Ralph Kin
caid. After cards the players
were served hot rolls and shrimp
salad.
Last Wednesday Arnica club
met at the home of Mrs. Dick
Krebs with Mrs. John Jepsen as
co-hostess. After the business
meeting, court whist was played.
High prize was won by Mrs. Bill
Rietmann and low by Mrs. Krebs'
sister-in-law, Mrs. Donna Sher
rard of Ocean Lake, who was a
visitor.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Larson and
daughters of Portland visited at
the home of her brother and
sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Rob
ert Jepsen and family Saturday
and Sunday.

lone Garden Club
Studies Pest Control
IONE The February meeting
of the lone Garden club was
held at the home of Mrs. Oscar
Lundell. Her sister-in-law, Mrs
Mary Swanson, assisted her.
Special guest for the afternoon
was Mrs. Harry Andrews of Echo,
who is district director for Blue
Mountain District No. 10. She
was accompanied by Mrs. Hale
of Hermiston.
Mrs. F. T. Martin gave the
program on the life cycle of the
aphid so that members could
plan a more effective program
of prevention. She also showed
slides of common bugs with ac
companying explanations. Mrs.
Edith Nichoson read a paper on
various gulls.
Eleven members and five
guests were present to enjoy the
program and refreshments.
Sew-A-Longs Meet
Members fo the Sew-A-Long
4-H club met on February 16 at
the Home Economics room in the
grade school to work on 4-H pro
jects. Members present were
Nonda Clark, Jean Stockard,
Margaret Green, Susan Drake
and Carol Rawlins. Mrs. Raw
lins, our leader, helped individ
ual members layout their pat
terns and cut out garments. No
regular business meeting was
held.
