Pony 'A' Five Wins;
lone Takes B' Tilt

Heppner's Ponies definitely
have two different teams. The
Ponies' B team has a 1-5 record,
and the 'A' team has a 6-1
record.
The Ponies again split a twin
bill with the lone Cards, with
Ione's 'B' team racking up a
29-21 victory and the Heppner
'A team winning 29-22.
The Heppner 'B' team had on
ly five plavers eligible but put
up a good fight and led, 1513,
at the half. But the lone team
came on strong in the second
half and took the Ponies by
eight points.
It was the same story in the
'A' game with Heppner having
eligibility troubles and also hav
ing only five players. The Ponies'
'A team sported a balanced seor
ing attack and ended with its
sixth straight win. Steve Petty
John topped Heppner scoring.
The Heppner lads are tenta
tively scheduled to journey to
Pilot Koek to play the Rockets
on hihlay at 1:30 p.m.

TRAILS

Those who have looked up to
ward the mountains recently
have probably noticed that there
has been a terrific snowfall dur
ing the week. There was about
eight inches of powder on the
slope at Arbuckle Saturday
morning. By evening there was
another four inches added, and
it was still snowing. The skiing
conditions were ideal Sunday.
The plentiful amount of new
snow made driving a bit compli
cated Saturday. Several cars
were stuck in the snow but all
made it out with a little pushing
and pulling. Sunday Orville
Cutsforth came to the rescue in
his mountain car "Essie." He
cleared one lane of traffic from
the bottom of Shaw Creek to
the area with the small snow
plow attached to the front. The
strain was too much for faith
ful Essie, however, and when
they arrived at Arbuckle she
groaned and moaned and re
fused to go any farther. Due
to his efforts no one encountered
any difficulty in driving to the
area Sunday. We all thank you,
Orville!
The Morrow County School
Board was very generous in offer
ing the George property to the
ski club to be reclaimed lor
building a lodge at the area.
After much study and deliber
ation, the club was reluctantly
forced to admit it had neither
the manpower nor the finances
at this time to use the building
properly.
The date of March 14 has
been selected for the annual fun
and competition day at Arbuckle
Mountain. The youngsters in the
club are looking forward to this
day to show off their newly ac
quired skills on skiis. Keep this
date in mind and watch for
further announce m e n t s. Don
Wise and Ken Peck are in
charge of plans for the day.
New on the hill this week:
the Bob Henry family. Bob, new
manager of the J. C. Penney
store, says skiing is one of his
favorite hobbies. The Glenn Per
kins family skiers recently
moved to Heppner from Alaska.

Mustangs Clobbered

You are breezing along on top
of the league with not a care
in the world and the league
basketball championship is just
beyond your reach. You need one
more win to wrap it up and
you are scheduled to play a team
you have beaten once already
by 20 points.
This sounds like an ideal sit
uation for any basketball team
but this same situation turned
into a nightmare for the Heppner
High Mustangs Saturday night
as they traveled to Burns and
were upset by the Hilanders, 66
58. Heppner shot a cold .302 from
the floor for the game with the
third-place Hilanders and really
suffered at the free throw line
as it was able to convert only
26 of 46 attempts for a .565 av
erage. Meanwhile, the Hilander crew
ripped the net at a .350 pace
and converted 22 of 27 from the
charity stripe for a .815 mark.
Both teams opened fast in the
contest and went immediately
to work on the bucket to gain
an advantage. By the end of
the stanza, the-Horsemen had
fired themselves to a slim 20
18 lead.
The pace slowed considerably
in the second quadrant as both
quintets hit a cool period from
the shooting line. By intermis
sion, the Mustangs had hiked
their advantage to four points at
31-27.
Burns took command in the
third canto and started on the
way to their sixth league vic
tory of the season and as the
teams lined up for the final tip,
the Hilanders were in front, 44
40. From this point, the Mustang
effort continued to go down hill
and the Burns five charged to
victory.

Church of the Nazarene, with
International offices in Kansas
City, Mo., has reported that the
denomination exceeded the 400,-000-mark
in world membership
during 1963, according to the lo
cal pastor, J. G. Weller.
Grand total for 1963 was 401,
532 members. Membership in
overseas churches in 4'4 countries
was 59,500. The Nazarene denom
ination has more than doubled
in membership in the last 20
years. In 1943, its world mem
bership was 197,892.
Per capita giving was a record
$153.56 in 1963, an increase of
$5.78 over the previous high
mark in 1962.
