Hoopers Post Big Win;
Defeat Sherman Here
By GREG FIERCE
Heppner's Mustangs swept
through their second Greater
Oregon league basketball game
here by dropping Sherman Coun
ty, ranked fourth in the Oregon
Journal A-2 poll, 55-51, before
a crowd of some 800 persons in
the new Heppner gym Friday
night.
The victory kept the Mustangs
at the top of the league ladder
and evened games with the
smooth Sherman county five,
which had emerged victorious
over Heppner in the Condon in
vitational tournament during the
Christmas holiday period.
Three regulars scored in
double figures for the Mustangs
as they ran up their second win
against no defeats in the new
hoop plant.
Early in the game, the Mus
tangs, who are ranked in the top
10 in all three state A-2 polls,
fell behind, 10-14, but came on
strong and had the lead at in
termission, 26-23.
Ken Wright fortunately chose
this game to give one of the best
demonstrations of outside shoot
ing seen here for a long time.
He dropped in shots from 20 to
25 feet out to take top honors
for the Mustangs with 18. When
Sherman came out to guard him,
he passed in to his teammates,
Lee Padberg and Doug Dubuque,
who finished with 17 and 12 re
spectively. After intermission, the Mus
tangs saw their lead lost only
once, this early im the third
quarter when Sherman went in
front briefly, 30-31. Surging back,
the Heppner five pulled away
steadily and at the end of the
third quarter had a six-point
margin, 42-36.
Rolling on, the home club gave
the partisan crowd a chance to
breathe easier as they moved to
a 10-point margin at one time,
48-38, but, led by Doug Bish and
nifty Ron Johnson, the Huskies
fought back to narrow the final
margin to four points.
Heppner's shooting average
was down to 29 with the lads
getting only 21 of 71. Wright
alone had a good percentage as
he hit his eight from the floor
on 18 attempts, close to a .500
mark. Sherman county, a team
that won frank admiration from
the local fans, shot almost iden
tically to Heppner, getting 20 of
70 tries.
Padberg, sensational on the
floor with his ball hawking tac
tics, led the Mustangs in re
bounds, 15 to 13.
Coach Bob Cantonwine was
well pleased with the way his
boys played and said that it
went as they had planned it.
Johnson topped Sherm a n ' s
scoring with 18 and Bish follow
ed with 15. The losers saw two
of their squad leave the game
via personal fouls, Including big
Ken Blagg and Bish. Johnson
and Dick Grabenhorst each had
four at the end of the contest.
For Heppner, Dave George and
Carl Bauman were both in
trouble with four each, but none

Mustangs Capture
Come-from-Behind
Win over Condon
By GREG PIERCE
Forced to come from behind
to catch the Condon Blue Devils,
the Heppner High basketball
team topped the Gilliam county
team there Saturday night, 65
to 49, to post their second vic
tory over Condon this season.
The Mustangs had all they
could handle in the non-league
encounter. Condon took the lead
at the end of the first quarter,
18-12. In the second stanza the
Mustangs outshot Condon and
closed the score to 29-25 at half
time but were still trailing.
Doug Dubuque, playing his
first week-end as a starter,
showed real strength under the
boards and collected eight points.
Fired up after the half, the
Horsemen with the help of dead
eye Ken Wright, finally went
ahead, 46-40. The fourth period
was all on Heppner's side as they
coasted to victory, 65 to 49.
Lee Padberg hit for 13 to take
second place in the Mustang
scoring.
Coach Bob Cantonwine used
all 12 players, and eight of them
collected points. However, the
coach was not pleased with the
way the team played in the first
half.
The Mustangs shot 30 per cent
from the field and 53 per cent
from the foul line. Condon hit
a cooler 26 per cent from the
field but a hot 78 per cent from
the foul line
Mike Parrlsh was high man
for Condon with 16 and Robert
Stinchfield was second with 12.

Cardinals
Climb on
Tired of being kicked around
on the basketball court this year,
lone High's Cardinals surged
through with a pair of road vic
tories over the week-end, defeat
ing Stanfield at Echo Friday
night, 68 to 47, and whacking
Helix there Saturday night, 61
to 54.
These victories brought Coach
Dick Strait's squad to fifth spot
in the standings of the Umatilla
Morrow B league and put them
above Echo, Helix, Stanfield and
Umapine, the latter two yet to
taste victory.
Tom Heimbigner was the big
scorer for the Cardinals against
Stanfield, tallying 21 points. The
lone players fired a sizzling .539
clip for the night, making 29 of
54' attempts. Stanfield managed
only 14 of 42.
The winners led all the way,
holding a 12-7 margin at the
first quarter stop and holding a
28-20 halftime margin. They
really put on the steam in the
third quarter with 20 points to
only six for Stanfield, giving
them a clinching 48 to 26 margin,
and then eased off in the final
stanza, allowing Stanfield 21
while they hit another 20.
Four of the five lone starters
wound up in double figures with
Jay Ball netting 12, Mark Halvor
sen 11 and Joe Halvorsen 10. Fred
Gutherv topped Stanfield with
14.
Stanfield's jayvees won the
preliminary, 47 to 39.
Helix proved a lot tougher for
the Cards who cooled off on
their shooting Saturday night.
The Grizzlies trailed six points
at the half, 33 to 27, but fought
beak and with minutes to go
were only two points behind.
However, lone rallied and
wound up on the long end of
the 7-point difference.
Evrey starter for the Cards hit
in double figures and only three
points separated the lowest and
highest. Mark Halvorsen and
Ball led the team with 13 each,
followed by Heimbigner and Joe
Halvorsen with 11 and Bill
Klinger with 10.
However, Helix' Charles Porter
was high man on the floor with
20 for the losers.
lone grabbed a narrow 16-15
first quarter lead, took the 6-
point bulge at the half and wid
ened it to seven at the end of
the third quarter, 47-40, before
feeling and resisting the Grizz
lies' last ditch pressure in the
final period.

How many ways is electricity used In this picture?
How many ways is it used in your home? Do you ever wonder
what happens when you plug into a wall outlet? Where does the
power come from? You usually can't see it unless it is in a light.
Why do fuses blow? Why should you NEVER touch an electrical
object with wet hands? Scores of 4-H Club members could tell
you the answers. They found them while working in the 4-H
electric program. Through the Cooperative Extension Service
and sponsoring groups, the young people have access to some of
the best personal guidance and informative literature in the
electrical field. Boys and girls interested in electricity should se
