    Mishap Injures
Three Persons;
Patrolman Hurt
David Proudfoot, 17, Echo, is
charged with reckless driving
following a two-car accident
southeast of Heppner Sunday
evening. The accident, which in
jured three persons, including
Proudfoot, occurred about 4:45
p.m. Sunday evening approxi
mately two miles from Heppner
on the Willow Creek highway,
according to Sheriff C. J. D. Bau
man. Those injured in the accident,
besides Proudfoot, were Mrs.
Betty Rood and State Officer Jim
Gordon, both of Heppner. Gor
don received a broken leg and
a deep cut on the forehead. Mrs.
Rood suffered facial cuts. Proud
foot also sustained facial lacer
ations. All three were taken to
the Pioneer Memorial hospital
for treatment. Mrs. Rood and
Proudfoot were treated and dis
charged Sunday evening, but
Gordon remained for treatment
and was dismissed Monday.
Officer Gordon said that he
was at the roadside checking
hunters when the accident happ
ened. He said that he had just
stopped and checked Mr. and
Mrs. Jerry Roods' pickup and was
talking to them when he saw
Proudfoot's vehicle coming up
the road from town at an appar
ent high rate of speed.
Gordon said there was no
time to sound a warning. He
dove for the Rood pickup. Almost
simultaneously, Proudfoot's pick
up slammed into the Roods' ve
hicle and struck Gordon, throw
ing him into the middle of the
road.
Gordon stated that the next
thing he knew he was lying in
the center of the road and was
unable to move. Proudfoot's pick
up came to rest on its top further
up the road. Gordon commented
that the lights of Rood's pick
up were on low beam and that
he, Gordon, had a flashlight in
his hand which was shining on
the road when the accident
occurred.
Both the damaged vehicles
were brought to town by a
wrecker from Farley Motor Co.

Entrance was made by breaking
the glass in the back door, then

door. Glass was also broken on
an inner door which would have
gained entrance to the hall from
which the office opens. This door
was not opened, however.
The break-in was discovered
by Principal Ron Daniels Satur
day morning. He stated the
thieves went to an upper floor
and took three musical instru
ments from the band room when
they did not get into the office.
State police are investigating
and apprehended two young
men who were occupants of a
car which was wrecked between
here and Irrigon Friday night.
The three musical instruments
missing from the school were in
the car.
