Combine Fire Controlled
At Ralph Crum Ranch

IONE A fire which started in
the motor of a combine on the
Ralph Crum ranch last Thursday
could have caused severe grain
loss. However, their son, Monte,
quickly i?h"t off the motor caus
ing the fire to stop just short
of the fuel tanks.
Mr. and Mrs. Crum wish to
thank those who came so promp
tly to their assistance, confin
ing the fire to the combine.
Mrs. John Voorhees of Portland
came on Saturday to spend a
few days visiting her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Crawford,
and other relatives in the area.
Mrs. Garland Swanson and son
Jim, and Mrs. Alfred Nelson, Jr.,
Keith and Karen, spent the
week-end in The Dalles attend
ing the Little League baseball
games. Jim and Keith were
among those chosen from the
Indians team to play on the AH
Star team on Friday and Satur
day in The Dalles.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Connor
returned Sunday from' a week
end spent in Portland visiting
their daughter, Lee, who is at
tending summer school there.
Mrs. O'Connor's mother, Mrs.
Edna Yarnoll, came home with
them for a two week visit.
Hauslers At Wallowa Camp
, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hausler and
children, Betty, Robin, Carol, and
Rheda, departed on Friday for
Wallowa Lake, where they will
spend the next throe weeks. Mr.
Hausler will be an instructor
in mathematics and French at
the Wallowa Educational Day
Camp. Donald Cole of Heppner
will be life guard at the lone
pool during Mr. Hausler's. ab
sence. MerriLee Jacobs and Maurene
McElligott went to Portland on
the train Thursday. MerriLee
will visit a friend for a week
and Maurene will visit her
grandmother, Mrs. Charles Mc
Elligott. Mark Morgan of Portland has
arrived at the home of his cousin,
Lloyd Morgan, to assist in har
vest. Mrs. Stella O'Meara came
home from the hospital on
Thursday and is slowly recup
erating from her illness.
Mrs. Joyce Darst and children
Dick, Hai, and Dixie of Salem
arrived on Saturday for a visit
at the home of her brother, Mr.
and Mrs. Louis Carlson and
family.
Mrs. Berl Akers came home
on Saturday from the hospital in
The Dalles. She is recovering
from recent surgery.
Mrs. Clyde Crawford and sons
of Portland have been spending
the week visiting her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dalaell. Mr.
Crawford came on Saturday and
took his family home on Mon
day. John Botts underwent surgery
in Pioneer Memorial hospital
on Thursday evening. Ho is re
ported to be In satisfactory con
dition. His daughter, Mrs. Robert
Crowell and children of Omak,
Wn are here to visit him, and
also to be with her mother, who
was a recent hospital patient.
Mrs. Roger Steigor and child
ren of Portland were visiting
this week at the home of her
sister. Mrs. Herbert Ekstrom Jr.
and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Adon Hamlett
and family of Fruitland, Ida.,
arrived on Monday for a visit
with her mother, Mrs. Mary
Swanson. They will also make
a trip to the coast and visit in
Portland and Salem before re
turning home.
Mr. and Mrs. Mattlon Hicks
were here this week end to assist
Mr. and Mrs. George Flchter,
who were moving into their
new home. They recently pur
chased the Clarence Brenner
property.
Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Llnd
strom drove to Portland on Sun
day. Mrs. Llndstrom will remain
for a while and receive dental
treatments.
First Lieutenant Dennis Swan
son advises his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Garland Swanson that they
have moved to a new home and
their new address is 27 A Sun
chon. Fort Bragg. N. C.
Mrs. John Armington and
daughters are here visiting her
mother, Mrs. Dale Ray and Mr.
Ray. Mr. Armington stopped in
for a visit on his return from
a business trip in the east and
lias now gone back to their home
in Los Angeles. His family will
remain for the rest of the month.
Friends have had word from
Mrs. Ida Esteb, who has been
visiting her son Raymond Flet
cher in Salem. She is go'riK to
Hood River to visit another
daughter before returning home.

strom and daughter drove down
from Wrnatchee, nil. on Suiv
day to visit his parents, Mr
anil Mrs. Herbert Ekstrom Sr.
Mrs. Ekstrom and Vickie re
mained for harvest.
Mr. and Mrs. George Looman
and family of Purchell, Okla.,
are guests at the home of her
brother, Mr. and Mrs. Gene
Harryman. They arrived on Fri
day. Les Matthews and a friend
flew down from Boise, Idaho, on
Monday to attend to some busi
ness. Dobyns Move to Eugene
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dobyns
have sold their home on Third
Street to Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Snider. Mrs. Dobyns is here this
week packing and plans to leave
on Saturday for their new home
in Eugene. Their address will
be 315 Kourt Drive, Eugene, Ore
gon. Mrs. Richard Rea and daugh
ters of Portland came up on Fri
day to visit Mr. Rea, who has
been working here. I hey are
guests at the Lewis Halvorsen
home.
Week-end guests of Rev. and
Mrs. Walter Crowell were his sis
tor and brother-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Harris Kardatzke from Port
land. Mrs. Ray Heimbigner spent
Tuesday in Portland.
Walter Roberts returned on
Friday from a trip to Chehalis,
Wn. where he visited with his
sister, and another sister who
was present from California.

Tuesday afternoon. Plans were
made for a potluck "get-together"
at the T. E. Messenger
home on Sunday, July 28. All

the funeral services for Henry
Cavin who passed away at a
hospital in that city loiiowing
a short illness. Mr. and Mrs.

are known in the community
having visited here several
times.

caller in Lexington one day last
week.

were held in Lewistown, Mont.,
Friday, July 19, for W. C. (Andy)
Anderson, who died in his sleep
Monday morning, July 15. Mrs.
Anderson and a brother from
Kellogg, Ida., left Tuesday
morning for Lewistown, and
were joined there by the Ander
sons' daughter, Mrs. Jake Arndt
of St. Paul, Minn.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Swearingen
and Gerry spent Sunday at
Maupin, where they attended a
Swearingen Family Reunion,
with 50 persons present.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Smith,
Marina and Rebecca of Coal
Valley, 111., left for home Fri
day, after spending 12 days here
visiting Smith's folks, Mr. and
Mrs. Leslie N. Smith. They were
joined here by Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Smith and family and
Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Smith and
family of Portland. Also, during
their vacation, the Leslie Smiths
and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence
Smith and family spent one
week-end in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Rees Morgan
drove to Portland Friday to visit
Morgan's brother, Enoch Mor
gan, who recently underwent
surgery at St. Vincents hospital,
and is a patient there. The Rees
Morgans returned to Irrigon
Saturday.
Mrs. Lloyd Cooley returned
Friday from a 3-week visit with
her mother, Mrs. Elnora Arbo
gast, of Moreland, Okla., who
sends her greetings to all her

Poland to Lead

527. is a minister on the move.
The Poland family will lead a
delegation of members of the
Hermlston congregation ot Je
hovah's Witnesses to an inter
national convention of the re
ligious group scheduled for the
Pasadena Rose Bowl, September
1-8.
Convention officials in Pasa
dona, Calif., announced that 70,
000 persons are expected to at
tend the eight-day gathering
representing the Western United
States, Canada and Mexico.
"We plan our annual vacation
around an outing for the family
including travel,' Mr. Poland
said, "but also on the agenda
is attendance at a religious con
vention of Jehovah's Witnesses
which is a regular part of our
ministerial training program.
This vear our plans revolve
around a trip to Pasadena."
"A total of 21 other assem
biles are planned around the
world." Mr. Poland said, "cover
ing Europe, the Near Last, Asia
Australia and the Isles of the
Pacific. These meetings are Bible
educational sessions designed to
point out the responsibilities and
obligations resting upon Inns

employed at Eastons Drug Store.
Mrs. Bob Gasser, Philip and
Joan drove to Kellogg to spend
a week with Mrs. Gasser's
mother, Mrs. Jere Wilson, and to
bring Barbara and Ann, who had
been visiting their grandmother,
home.
Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Morgan
of LaGrande stayed overnight
with Mr. and Mrs. Rees Morgan

The Fire Department has pre
pared labels giving telephone
numbers to call in case of fire.
These labels have been left at
each grocery store, and can be
obtained there free of charge.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren McCoy,
Susan, Mike and Debbie left Sat
urday morning for Bellingham,
Wn., for a weeks vacation.
Summer school classes at A. C.
Houghton Elementary have been
concluded, but the Tuesday
story-hours, conducted each
Tuesday from 10:30 to 12:00 will
continue. Mrs. Floyd Hobbs Is
In charge of the story-hour.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hill are
caring for their grandchildren,
Dannette, Donnie and Deeno
Leighton, while the childrens'
folks, Mr. and Mrs. Don Leigh
ton, attended a pony show in
Portland. While in Portland, the
Don Lieghton's will stay with
Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Cook and
Rhonda Mae.

MONUMENT A farewell
party was held Saturday even
ing in the Legion-Grange hall
for the Richard Drees family
who have made their home here
for the past five years. Mrs. Drees
has been the high school prin
cipal here. They were presented
with a set of dishes as a fare
well gift. There were around 65
adults and children present.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Williams,
their son and daughter, of Sac
ramento, Calif., arrived Tuesday
to visit their families, Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Williams and son
Walter, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Martin. Charles is stationed in
the Air Force Base near Sacra
mento. Mary Llppert and Maynard
Hamilton drove to Heppner Tues
day on business.
Mrs. Oleta Farrens and daugh
ter drove to John Day Friday on
business.
Bob Porter left Friday noon
for Pendleton where he took a
plane to return to the Air Force
Base in Hawaii where he is sta
tioned. His wife, Georgia Lee,
had to return two weeks ago to
her job there.
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Edson of
central California spent a few
days here visiting their son.
Gary Edson, who is our new
student pastor here.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Leathers
have now moved back to their
home above Hamilton.
Gary Edson left Sunday morn
ing to take Vicki Smith and two
of the George Lyle girls to sum
mer church camp.
Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Lewis and
family of San Leandro, Calif.,
arrived July 13 and left the 22nd
after visiting his brother, Earl
Lewis and family. Mrs. Earl
Lewis drove to Prineville a week
earlier and met the daughter
Susan who came ahead of the
family, then returned home with
them.
Mr. and Mrs. Tunes Rounds of
Long Creek were supper guests
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Fred McWillis Sunday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Vandetta
took a load of cattle to Herm
iston Monday for Elzy Emery.
Dinner guests Sunday at the
Elmer Matteson home were their
son, LaVerne J. Matteson, his
wife, daughter Martha and son
Ralnh of Alturas. Calif., and Mrs.
Jessie Scott and two sons, Robert
and Robin.
Pearl Thompson, Sophia Leasy

dinner at the Fred McWillis
home Monday and picked tasp
