Timber Harvest
In Oregon Tops
Cut During '61
Oregon harvested eight and
one-half billion board feet of
timber in 1962, to maintain its
quarter century lead in log pro
duction among the states, ac
cording to figures just released
by State Forester Dwight L.
Phipps. This was well over a
billion board feet above last
year and the highest in the past
six years, except for 1959. Al
though the total is below the
production level of the years
1951-1956, it is greater than all
years prior to that time.
Morrow county's cut was
44,459,000 board feet.
Of the 8,500,038,000 board feet
harvested this past year some
4,099,082,000 board feet or 48 per
cent was produced on private
lands; 3,074,900,000 board feet
or about 36 percent on National
Forests; 1,104,042,000 board feet
or nearly 13 percent from Bureau
of Land Management forests;
168,987,000 board feet on State
managed forest lands and 53,
027,000 board feet from Indian
lands. This was an increase over
1961 in the three primary land
holder categories of 663 million
board feet on National Forest
lands; 244 million board feet
on private lands and 209 million
board feet on Bureau of Land
Management lands.
Lane county retained its lead
in log production, acquired last
year from Douglas county, by
marking up a total of 1,709,081,
000 board feet of timber har
vested. Douglas county, leading
producer during 1949-60, was a
strong second with 1,318,699,000
board feet. Linn county made
third place for the second year
in a row with 617,913,000 board
feet, some 69 million over last
year. It held second and third
position steadily during 1942
through 1950. Coos and Curry
counties were fourth and fifth,
as they were last year, with
volumes of 522,979,000 and 491,
190,000 board feet respectively
dropping from their usual third
and fourth of the two years prev
ious. In the forests of eastern Ore
gon, Klamath county, the big
gest timber producer up until
1951, stepped into first place for
the second time in three years
with a valume harvest of 248,
715,000 board feet. Grant county,
occupying an undisputed first
place from 1951 through 1959
came up second best with a vol
ume of 173,464,000 board feet.
Lake county managed a third,
having maintained this station
or better since 1953, with a cur
rent volume of 167,052,000 board
feet.
The tabulation of log produc
tion has no direct relationship to
lumber production of the state,
since some of the logs go to
adjacent states, while there is
also a volume of imports. Too,
large stocks of logs can be car
ried over from one year to the
next in cold decks, rafts and
booms.
