TO THE EDITOR
To the Editor:
Shouting is transitory; results
count.
So far as our 52nd legislative
session is concerned the shout
ing has been conspicuous but,
so far, results have been few.
Our legislators have consum
ed much time with less accomp
lishments than those attained
in the two previous sessions of
which I have an intimate know
ledge. There will be those who will
say sour grapes but, believe me,
I'm viewing this session with
out bias.
In my opinion this assembly
has taken more time and, at a
greater cost, to arrive at a sem
blance of accomplishment than
was necessary.
Perhaps there is much Justifi
cation in the criticism that too
many legislators are spending
their time carping at the activ
uioo nf othors Dartv fieht
against party and the inescap
able knowledge that too many
take advantage of free postage,
secretarial help and all the other
things a solon falls heir to. Of
course, these advantages make
it easier to mow down those in
disfavor.
I enjoyed immensely your last
issue. Letters and news stories
pertaining to Boardman were
especially appreciated.
It has been beyond me to un
derstand the criticism directed
at the Boardman picture. It
would appear to me that getting
the Boardman project would
rank (not so striking, of course)
with our great land purchases
from France and the purchase
of Alaska from Russia.
It Is not, In my judgement, too
Important that Boeing develop
projects at the site. The thing
that is vital is that we now
have the location one of the
prime Industrial sites in the
west.
Because of the very nature of
the location it will probably re
main one of the few smog free
areas. Transportation facilities
are a tremendous advantage.
Only political trickery could
prevent us from capitalizing on

Annie Carter Lefler died in
San Francisco, Calif., April 16,
at the age of 89 and was buried
at Cypress Lawn cemetery, in
that city on April 19.
Mrs. Lefler will be remember

and came to America wnen a
small child, to Salt Lake City,
Utah, where she lived until af

and the birth of their first child.
The small family then moved
to Oregon settling near Long
Creek and Monument where
four more children were born.
Mrs Pnrtpr marripH Jack Lef

in Heppner when it so nearly
burned, on July 4, 1918. She la
ter moved to Portland and then,
in 1949 to San Francisco, where
she was residing with her son,
Melvin, at the time of her death.
Sh lnavps nnp son. Melvin
Carter and one daughter, Jessie
Smith, Heppner; eignt grana
chiklren, 18 great grandchildren
and five great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith went from here
for the memorial service with
her son, James Smith, of Pen
dleton. thiu orpnl nnnnrtunitV.
Even if the site should not
be used for years its enhancing
in value would make it a prof-
lt:ihln pntnrnrisp.
I am sure those directing the
destinies of this state will ul
timately use the great site to
the best interests to me great
est numbers.
But let's remember big de
velopment takes time.
Let's not lose heart.
