A "Five-day Plan" to quit
smoking will bo held in the
American Legion hall in Heppner

will present the group therapy
clinic to everyone interested.

ago, or even 10 years ago did
not have the facts that are avail
able now. Had it been, there
would no doubt be fewer smokers
today and fewer deaths from
lung cancer," said Mr. Boyd.
While all other deaths from
cancer have closely followed the
pattern of all deaths in general,
that of deaths from cancer of
the lung has sky rocketed, he
said. In 1930 there were 2,500
lung cancer deaths. This shot up
to 11,000 in 1945. This year the
American Cancer society place
the figure at an estimated 41,000
people,
"What are the chances of sur
vival when cancer of the lung
is detected? Statistics offer
little hope, for only about 1 in
20 is cured today." Mr. Boyd
suggests that wives come with
their husbands for correct man

Saddle-ites Meet
The Saddle-ites met at the Rod
Murray home on March 10. We
answered roll call by pointing
out the parts of the horse on
a chart. Maralee Murray gave
a report on quarter horses which
we discussed later. Visitors were
Karen and Kalhy Blake. Our next
meeting will be at the Wrang
ler grounds on April 14 for
Wrangler Play Day.

Grange Initiates
New Members '

Grange will have initiation of
new members at the hall March
29, it was decided at the meet
ing last Thursday. The evening
began with potluck supper at
fi:30. Hosts wree Mr. and Mrs.
'Nathan Thorpe and Mrs. W. G.
Seehafer.
New members accepted were
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Thornhill and
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Munger.
Club Has Membership Tea
Mrs. Ronald Black was hostess
for the annual Membership Tea
of the Boardman Tillicum club
last week at her home. Guests
included Mrs. Raymond Davis,
Mrs. William Crews, Mrs. Ted
Talbot. Mrs. Herman Burg and
Evelyn Mclnnes.
Mrs. Black welcomed the
cniests. and Mrs. II. M. Walker
was in charce of the following

Tillicum club. Mrs. LaVern Part
low; dues and project report, Mis.
Dewey West; greetings irom an
district office, Mrs. Joe Tatone,
district president; Mrs. Walker

Ed Bennett and LaVerne Van-
Marter, Sr., were in Portland
three days last week and were
houseguests of Mr. Bennett's son
and daughter-in-law, Mr, and
Mrs. Bob Bennett.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Moore
and daughter, Dorothy; Scott
Holmberg, and Luanna Herschell,
all of Portland, were week-end
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert
Herschell. The children will re

Moores travel to Washington
state.
Mrs. Wilbert Lone and Mrs.
Oma Cox journeyed to Pendle
ton last Thursday to attend a
business meeting.
Mr. and Mrs. Max Harris spent
a few days last week fishing
at Ochoco Reservoir.

Greenfield Club Gives Donation
Mrs. Bernard Donovan was hos
tess for the Home Economics
club of Greenfield Grange Wed
nesday of last week at her home
starting with lunch at 12:30 p.m.
She was assisted by Mrs. Kollin
BishoD. Guests included Mrs. A.
R. Fortner and Mrs. Otto Mun-zer.
It was voted to send a do
nation to the Salk Research
Fund.
Mrs. W. G. Seehafer reported
that $100.57 was collected dur
ing the Heart Fund Drive, with
a promise of more to be added.
The next meeting will be at
the home of Mrs. Nathan Thorpe
April 10, with Mrs. Claud Wor
den as co-hostess.
