478 Accidental
Poisonings Told
In State in 1962
There's virtually no limit to
the poisonous substances which
people accidently swallow each
year, especially children under
three years of age, Carl G. Ash
ley, M. D., director of the mater
nal and child health section,
Oregon State Board of Health,
reported today.
This fact is proven by the Ore
gon Poison Control Registry
which received 478 reports of
accidental poisonings occuring to
Oregonians during the past year.
Their annual report listed 271
cases of poisoning from acciden
tal ingestion of internal medi
cines, 109, or 40, which were
caused by overdoses of aspirin.
Other sources of poisoning in
cluded: external medicine, 32
cases; household preparations,
55- petroleum products, 12; cos
metics, 9; pesticides, 42; poison
ous plants, 11; painting supplies,
8; veterinary supplies, 1; and
other or unspecified, 2.
The greatest single cause of
accidental poisoning after aspir
in was barbiturate sedatives, 37
cases; insecticides, 27; tranquil
izing drugs, 19; analgesics other
than aspirin, 16; non-barbiturate
sedatives, 13; antiseptics, 13;
lotions and medicated ointments,
11; and bleach and detergents,
11 cases.
Numerous other substances
were swallowed by Oregonians,
such as, deodorants, lighter
fluid, shoe polish, toadstools, and
paint. Fifteen, or 3.17c, of the
cases reported to the registry re
sulted in death. In addition, an
undetermined number suffered
permanent damage as a result
of their accidental poisoning, Dr.
Ashlev stated,
The Oregon Poison Control
Registry was established in 1958
as an around-the-ciocK clearing
house of information on poisons
for physicians and hospitals. The
sponsoring agencies are the
State Medical Society, State
Board of Health, and the Univer
sity of Oregon Medical School.
The registry clearinghouse also
conducts education programs on
prevention and treatment of poi
sonintr cases.
The majority of cases, 329, or
797r. were in children under the
aee of five. Two year olds ac
counted for more cases than any
other ace group, with 178 report
ed poisonings, Dr. Ashley indi
cated.
National Poison Proven t i o n
Week will be observed March
17-23. It is a highlight of th
Oregon Poison Control Registry
and the State Board of Health e
year-around crusade to educate
naients to practice and teacti
safety habits in an effort to re
duce accidental poisonings in
Oregon. Make every week poison
prevention week, Dr. Ashley
urged.

Four Heppner men of the
state highway departm e n t ' s
maintenance and traffic divis

driving in 1962, the department
announces.
Edwin C. Wilson and Jphn
Neilson were among only 129 in
the state to get 13-year awards.
Dallas M. McDaniel rceeived an
8-year award and Harold L. Cur
.nutt a 71 year award.
At Boardman, Charles L. Potts
and Nathan Thorpe received 13
year awards, and Elvin L. Ely a
12-year award.
A total of 1,084 state drivers
received the awards, topping the
previous record high of 1,053 in
1961. To earn a safe driving
award, an employee must drive
55 per cent of the time during
the year and do it without be
coming involved in a prevent
able accident. Much of this driv
ing is done during times of foul
weather, the report pointed out.
