STILL THE days buzz by so rap
idly and we can't seem to ac
complish all that we would like
to do. And from the looks of my
schedule for the rest of the week
and week-end it is not going
to get much better! It doesn't
seem like Elks Annual time al
ready, but this is always the
highlight of the year, with many
friends and relatives coming
from way points to join in the
Elks birthday celebration. I have
a sneaking hunch that some will
take some time to watch the
high school basketball boys in
action here in an important
league game, then back to the
festivities.
, SADIE PARRISH won high last
Saturday afternoon at the OES
Social club get-together which
is held the first Saturday of the
month in the Masonic hall. Mar
tha Van Schoiack won high in
the pinochle group. Hostesses for
the afternoon were Beth Bryant
and Juanita Carmichael.

AT THE ELKS Ladies night
Thursday the gals voted to
keep Ladies night on the first
Thursday of each month. Nine
tables of pinochle and six of
bridge were in play with prizes
going to Laurel Van Marter,
high, bridge; Virginia Rosewali,
second; Jan Agee, door prize.
Prudy Casebeer, high, pinochle;
Mary Benge, second; and Mau
reen Devin, door prize. Hostesses
were Jean Bennett and Helen
Young. Heard that Laurel had a
fabulous high score!

THE ROBERT Van Houtes and
their daughter and son-in-law,
Neal and Lydia Penland,
Klamath Falls, got their signals
mixed up last week-end as the
Van Houtes went to Stayton and
the Penlands came home to visit
them!

JAN AGEE was hostess Tuesday
night for the Bridge Biddies
club. You know the one with all
of the Mary's involved! Mary
McLeod, Mary McClure, and
Mary Jean McCabe, Janina John
son, Marian Jonasson, LaFyrne
Pratt, Dorothy O'Rourke, and
Donna Gordon. Janina took high
and Dorothy walked off with the
second and traveling prizes.

PUBLIC CARD parties are quite
popular here and are an excel
lent means of earning funds for
worthwhile projects by the vari
ous organizations. Monday night
the American Legion Auxiliary
hold one which was hampered
by intense fog here and several
ether meetings in session but
still they had 11 tables in play.
The proceeds will be , used to
send a Heppner High school jun
ior girl to Girls' State in Salem
in June. Jean Bennett and Joyce
Ward were co-hostesses with
many of the auxiliary members
assisting. First prizes were hand
made red heart-shaped velvet
smocked pillows; second, home
made heart-shaped German cho
colate cakes; low, apple pie; door
prizes, basket full of homemade
cookies. Nellie Anderson won
high in pinochle, John Wight
man, second; Nora Turner, low;
and Madge Bryant, door prize.
Virginia Rosewali, high in
bridge; Shirley Blake, second1
Happy Graham, low; and Mac
Gilliam, door prize. The hostesses
commended the job well done by
the junior girls who served the
strawberry shortcake and coffee
preceding the play. They were
Susan and Kathy Melby, Linda
Heath, Sarah Miller, and Debby
Eennett.

LADIES OF the WSCS group of
the Methodist church held
their meeting Wednesday night
in the church basement rooms.
Velma Glass had charge of the
program and introduced Mrs. Roy
Kirk who spoke on "The Prob
lems of Our College Youth." She
also told of the many scholar
ships available. The group filled
29 boxes of cookies to be sent to
servicemen and college students
from the church. Hostesses were
Mary Bryant and Madge Bryant.

JANINA JOHNSON won high
Wednesday at the Renegers
bridge club. LaFyrne Pratt enter
tained two tables in play which
included Cork Norene, Bonnie
Barratt, Kay Anderson, Beverly
Gunderson, Inez Meador, Marian
Jonasson, and Gwen Huff. Inez
won second and Bonnie won the
special prize which was given
for bidding and making three no
trump. Don't ask me to explain
that one because I got lost after
one no trump!

FPIDAY AFTERNOON was Han
nah Anderson's lucky day! She
won high at the pinochle club
and with Carrie Beckett won the
pinochle prizes. She also teamed
with Millie Evans to meld 1500
trump. Wow! All in one day.
Millie went on to win low after
that 1500 trump? Others playing
were Hazel Hamlin, Mary Harris,
Gladys Beckett, Pearl Wright,
and Beulah Mankin.

A MOST unique shower was
given Tuesday as a surprise
for Madge Thomson which they
called "Grandma Shower" at the
home of Mrs. Ella Smith. The
gifts are for the expected new
arrival at the Tom (Meridith
Thomson) Walters home in
Woodland Hills, Calif. When
Madge gets the call that the
baby is here she will leave to
spend some time at the Walters
home. Hostesses for the "shower"
and bridge party were Mrs.
Smith and Delia McCurdy.
Guests were Helen Thomson,
Florence Green, Etta Parker,
Margaret Blake, Lucille Wilson,
Helen Cohn, and Fay Ferguson.
Florence won high for the play.

ed Saturday night with a pot
luck supper and bridge play for
the Four Table club. Ham was
the main .dish with other deli
cious foods to fill in and desserts.

Bridal Shower Fetes
Mrs. Bruce Moyer
Mrs. Bruce Moyer was honored
at a miscellaneous bridal shower
given Saturday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. Orval Matheny.
Others in charge of the shower,
given by the Hope Lutheran
church ladies, were Mrs. Don
Evans, Mrs. Elmer Schmidt, and
Mrs. Ken Robinson.
Mrs. Moyer's sister, Karen
McCurdy, assisted with the open
ing of the lovely gifts. Pouring
was Mrs. Harlan McCurdy, Jr.,
mother of Mrs. Moyer, and spe
cial quest was her grandmother,
Mrs. Harlan McCurdy, Sr.
Two heart-shaped cakes were
the attraction at the serving
table. They were pink and white
with pink rosebuds, and one was
inscribed "Diane" and on the
other "Bruce" done in pink. A
bride and groom was situated
between the two cakes to add to
the decor.
The young couple, both stu
dents at EOC in La Grande, were
maried recently in La Grande
where they reside.
Buffet Supper Held
For Wedding Party
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Laird
were the hosts for a buffet sup
per held at their home February
1 following rehearsal for the
wedding of their daughter,
Elaine, and Ron Daley.
Mrs. Laird used white roses
and white candles in her decora
tions about the room. Members
of the party attending the sup
per were Miss Laird and Mi.
Daley, Shirley Van Wink 1 e ,
Helen Waterman, and Kay
Houck, the latter two classmates
of Elaine at Portland University;
Jim Armstrong, Portland Univer
sity; Harold Daley, Ron's brother,
Portland University; Jack Daley,
also a brother, Seattle Univer
sity; Tom Laird, Mrs. Don Ben
nett and daughter, Judy; Mrs.
Fred Gimbel and son, Tracy;
Father Raymond Beard; Billy
Wolff, Mrs. Herman Stroeber,
Mrs. Jack Van Winkle, and Floyd
Laird, Hermiston, father of Har
old Laird.
Altar Society Members
Have Work Meeting
A good attendance of members
of St. Patrick's Altar society was
present last Tuesday evening for
a work meeting. Major part of
the evening was devoted to cov
ering tops of used card tables
and fitting a stage curtain.
Mrs. Bob Brindle presided at
the business meeting when it
was voted to buy 40 new cloths
for card tables and to replace
some of the broken dishes on the
kitchen shelves.
Devotions, "Feast of St.
Blaize," observed February 3,
were given by Mrs. Robert
Strand.
Hostesses served refreshments
to 25 members attending. On the
committee were Mrs. John Molla
han, Mrs. Stacey Lovgren and
Mrs. Strand.
McQuarrie which included many
fresh vegetables including grat
ed parsnips, and Rita says the
parsnips added just the right fla
vor! The valentine theme was
carried out throughout the
rooms. Guests were the Conley
Lanhams, Ed Dicks, Lowell Grib
bles, Clint Mc-Quarries, Dick
Meadors, Gordon Pratts, and La
Verne Van Marters. Vi Lanharn
and Rachel Dick won high,
Laurel Van Marter and Clint won
second.

TUESDAY NIGHT last week
seven tables of duplicate
bridge were in play at the Elks
lodge rooms with two couples
ending up in a tie for high
north-south. They were Ed and
Rachel Dick and La Verne van
Marter and Fay Ferguson. Bobbe
Driscoll and Shirley Blake were
third. Dr. W. H. Woltf and Daisy
Collins were high east-west;
Harland McCurly, Jr., and Kdaa
Mae Lovgren were second; Bill
Blake and Jim Driscoll were
third, not to be outdone by their
wives!

At Valentine Dinner;

Husbands of Mother's Club
members were guests Sunday
evening in the dining rooms of
Hope Lutheran church for the
annual Valentine's Day dinner.
The rooms were artistically dec
orated in the Valentine theme by
co-chairmen, Mrs. Elmer Schmidt
and Mrs. Ken Robinson, who also
arranged the planned polluck
dinner.
Following the dinner, the
group adjourned to the auditor
ium where a colored film on
