Oregon Farm Labor
Wage Rate Third
Highest in Nation
Oregon hired farm workers in
1962 received the third highest
wages in the country, exceeded
only by wages paid in Washing
ton and California, reports Mrs.
Elvera Horrell, Oregon State
University extension agricultural
economist.
The Pacific Coast region tops
all others in the nation for farm
wage rates. Washington, Calif
ornia and Oregon, in that order,
led the nation, followed by Con
necticut. Massachus e 1 1 s and
Rhode Island tied for fifth and
Idaho was seventh.
Last year, Oregon's composite
wage rate, simmered down to
an hourly basis, averaged $1.22,
up two cents from 1961. Oregon's
January 1, 1963, wage rate was
$1.24, two cents above the 1962
average. National rates at the
start of this year were 94.8 cents,
an average of two cents higher
than a year earlier, she said.
The New England states, rank
ing second to the Pacific Coast
on the wage rate scale, recorded
the biggest percentage increase
in wages in 1962. The Pacific
Coast increased the least while
the East South Central states,
lowest on the wage scale, in
creased at about the same rate
as the national average, Mrs.
Horrell reported.
Family labor made up about
70 per cent of Oregon's total
farm labor force last year and
composed an even larger per
centage of the farm labor force
on a national basis. Farm labor
along the Pacific Coast was most
in demand in September, due
to the harvest of many Calif
ornia crops.
Between 1945 and 1961, the
number of farm workers drop
ped one-third while farm pro
duction increased one-third, Mrs.
Horrell pointed out. The num
ber of persons supplied with
farm products by one farm work
er nearly doubled during the
same period.
