Youth Enrolled At
Camp For Meeting

Mrs. Evelyn Krebs each took a
carload of 5th and 6th grade
youngsers to Camp Adams on
Sunday for a week of Church
camp. Going from lone were Ter
esa Tucker, Barbara Boyce, Kris
tin Nelson, Susan Jane Jepsen,
Jerri Krebs, Masha Ball, Mike
Hedman, Bobby Benson, and Ter
)y Cannon. Most of the young
sters will reLurn on Saturday.
Returning to lone with Mrs. Jep
sen were Barbara Nichols and
Sherry Smouse who had been
to another session of the camp
the preceding week.
Sunday School Classes canceled
The Sunday school teachers of
the lone Community church an
nounce that classes are dismiss
ed for the month of August and
for the Labor Day week-end.
They will resume the second
week-end in September. Church
will be held at the regular time.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Anderson
and nieces Ina and Cathy Blak
ley of Prosser, Wn spent a few
days with Mrs. Edythe White
and other area relatives. Ina
remained for an extended visit.

Frankie spent Wednesday at
Hardman at the home of her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine
Chapel, in honor of Mr. Chapel's
birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Joel Engieman
and Frankie and Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Roberts joined for a pic
nic at Cutsforth park on Sun
day. Wallace Matthews and daugh
ters, Deniece and Berniece spent
a few days last week at the
Seattle World's Fair.
Cathy Shockley returned to
lone with Mrs. Roy Lindstrom
and Susan for a visit with Mr.
and Mrs. Art Stefani Jr. and
Teresa.
Mr. and Mrs. John Portschy of
Pendleton visited at the home
of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Hershal Townsend during the
week-end.
Sue Townsend returned home
on Saturday following a two
week stay at Tollgate as a
counselor for the Lutheran Bible
camp held there recently. Kerry
Peterson spent the past week at
the camp.
Leave For North Carolina
1st Lt. and Mrs. Dennis Swan
son and family left on Sunday
for North Carolina. They were
to spend the night with Mr. and
Mrs. Terry Farrow at La Grande
and also were to stop and visit
Mr. and Mrs. Adon Hamlett at
Fruitland, Idaho. The Swansons
are on their way to Pope Air
Force Base in North Carolina
where he will be stationed. He
expects to be there for three
years.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tahey and
Tom Tahey of Sacramento, Calif,
visited with their sister, Mrs.
Delbert Emert during this past
week.
Mrs. Garland Swanson hosted
a birthday party for Richard
Hamlett's 9th birthday, at her
home on Monday, July 30. Sev
eral young guests and friends
were on hand to help celebrate
the occasion.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Thome, Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Melina, Mr. and
Mrs. Victor Rietmann and Mel
vin Melina spent Sunday at Bull
Prairie on an outing.

Portland and back on Friday
of last week for a dental ap
pointment. John and Carl Troedson and
Warren Stender attended the
Morrow county picnic in Port
land on Sunday.
Roy Lindstroms Have Daughter
Mr. and Mrs. Roy A. Lind
strom are the parents of a baby
girl, Paula Joy, born at St. An
thony hospital on July 27. She
tipped the scales at 7 pounds
4 ounces. Grandparents include
Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Und
strom, lone, and Mr. and Mrs.
Dorr Mason, . Portland. Great
grandparents are Mrs. Anna
Lindstrom, lone; Mrs. Hugh
Bell, Condon, and Mr. and Mrs

They brought Gene Grabil home
from Shelton, Wn., where he had
been visiting with the Morgans
for a couple of weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Tony Martin and
two children departed on Thurs
day for North Dakota. They have
been visiting her sister and fam
ily, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rice. The
Martins will visit the parents
of Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Rice
in North Dakota.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rietmann
and family visited at the home
of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy
Hurst at Arlington on Sunday.
John Peterson of Los Angeles,
Calif, has been a guest in homes
of relatives in this area this
past week.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Thome
were called to Caldwell, Idaho
on Wednesday for the funeral
services on Friday of his cousin's
husband, Brooks Ward. They re
turned to lone on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Milton Derrick
and three children of Merced,
Calif., visited at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Jess Warfield on
Tuesday of last week. Sunday
guests at the Warfield home
were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cooper
and three children of Seattle,
Wn.
Mrs. Nelle Kettle and Mrs.
Floy Graham of Berkeley, Calif.,
have been vacationing at the
home of their sister, Mrs. Winnie
Zinter. They are on their way
home after being in Honolulu
and Seattle.

ily on Sunday. -
Pioneer Resident,
M. Whittington,
Dies After Illness
Funeral services for Mrs.
Marie Whittington were held in
San Francisco, Calif., July 12,
She died at the Mt. Zion hos
pital there following a two
month's illness. The Rev. John
Harms of the Episcopal church
officiated at the services. In
terment was at the Portland
Crematorium.
Mrs. Whittington was born
August 29, 1887, a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Robison,
pioneers in the Eightmile dis
trict. She was a member of the
Christian church and spent her
childhood in Morrow county,
later attending Pacific Univer
sity at Forest Grove.
On July 3, 1906 she was mar
ried to Pearl Shamhart and to
this union one daughter was
born. The couple operated a
farm in the Eightmile district
for some time, later moving to
Heppner where their daughters,
Rita and Babe Shamhart, at
tended school. Mr. Shamhart
died in Klamath Falls in 1930.
In 1935 she was married to
Oscar Whittington who operated
the Star Theater in Bend for 25
years. After his death in Con
don from a heart attack, she
made her home in Condon with
her sister, Jocie Chappell, She
also spent some time in San
Francisco with her daughter, a
granddaughter and two child
ren. Survivors are her daughter,
Rita Adams, San Francisco;
step-daughter, Babe Dunn, Klam
ath Falls; granddaughter, Lola
M. Adolph, San Rafael, Calif.;

Pastor Completes
Colorado School
The Rev. Rod MacKenzie, pas
tor of the lone Community
church, has completed a course
in the Western Pastors' School,
meeting for the first time this
summer under the auspices of
the United Church of Christ at
two sisters, Ollie Adkins, Port
land, and Josie Chappell, Con
don; one brother, Walter Rob
ison, Mt. Hebron, Calif.; niece,
Elinor Strohmayer, Portland;
nephews, Richard and Dick Rob
ison, Heppner; step-daughters,
Eva Steele and Helen Lasher,
Portland, and many nieces and
nephews of Klamath Falls.
One week after her death was
the funeral of her sister-in-law,
Harriett G. Robison, a resident
of Coos Bay for many years. Ser
vices were held in the chapel
of Campbell-Watkins Funeral
Home, Coos Bay. She was a close
friend to Mrs. C. H. Bartholo
mew, Heppner.
La Foret in the Black Forest,
Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Although this is the first time
under the United Church of
Christ, the school session is the
22nd since it was organized by
the Congregational Board of
Home Missions.
The school concluded with a
votive candle service July 29, a
banquet on July 30, and a com
munion service July 31. The Rev.
MacKenzie attended on a schol
arship from the Board of Home
land Minist r i e s. Twenty-one
states were represented by the
student body of 58, and several
outstanding theological semin
aries were represented in the
faculty.
More than 1200 ministers have
attended the school over the
years.' It has a four-fold em
phasis: Lectures, reading, wor
ship, fellowship. Off campus ac
tivities included trips to Mt.
Evans, the Flying W Ranch,
Central City, Colorado College
for dinner and an evening of
chamber music, attendance at
"La Boehme" in Central City
and at presentation of "The Girl
of the Golden West."
