    lone Garden Club
Installs New Leaders

IONE The lone Garden club
meeting was held on Tuesday,
July 10, at the home of Mrs.
F. G. Hermann with Mrs. Phil
Emert assisting the hostess.
Officers for the new year were
installed with an impressive ser
vice prepared and conducted by
Mrs. Omar Rietmann. The fol
lowing new officers were pre
sented attractive corsages made
by the installing officer: Mrs.
Fannie Griffith, president; Mrs.
Oscar Lundell, vice-president;
Mrs. Ronald Bishop, secretary;
and Mrs. Ralph Crum treasurer.
Mrs. Fredrick Martin, delegate
to the 35th annual Oregon Fed
eration of Garden clubs conven
tion held at the Oregon Motor
Hotel in Salem, told of the high
lights of the convention and
gave useful information for the
local organization.
Mrs. vida Hehker conducted
two games for the enjoyment of
the 15 members and three guests
present. Mrs. Rietmann won the
game prize of blue scilla bulbs.

packages of Gro-Tron, a potting
soil for instant use, courtesy of
Gro-Tron Co. of Milwaukie.
The new year books which
were distributed stated that now
is the time to "eat peaches,
divide Iris clumps and swim."
On the program and year book
committee are Mrs. Rietmann,
chairman; Mrs. William Raw
lins, Mrs. Bishop, Mrs. Heliker
and Mrs. Emert.
Guests for the afternoon were
Mrs. Marion Palmer, Mrs. Gary
Tullis and Mrs. Wate Crawford,
who won the door prize.
The next meeting will be at
the home of Mrs. Walter Dobyns,
August 14 with a program cen
tered on budding.
The tree planting committee
expressed its appreciation to all
citizens who are faithfully
watering and caring for the
trees near their property. Only
through cooperation will the pro
ject be a success, and determine
whether it will be continued in
Ihe f itur.?.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ball were
called to Baker on Saturday for
the funeral services of her uncle,
Wiley Rogers, who died earlier
in the week. Also going with
Mr. and Mrs. Ball were her
brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
Dale Sherman, and her aunt,
Mrs. Ralph Sovereign of San
Rafael, Calif., who flew in to
be here for the services.
The Bingo club met Friday
afternoon at the home of Mrs.
nna Lindstrorn, with Mrs. Lind
strorn, Stella O'Meara and Mrs.
Walter Dobyns as co-hostesses.
Eleven members were present.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom White and

lone this week with Gordon
White and Mrs. Edythe White
and Dale.
Ellis Ball is home for a 2G-day
leave from his post in the U. S.
Air Force to work in harvest.
He will be employed by Art
Stefani.
Mrs. Gordon White and daugh
ter Lona were in lone over the
week-end from Portland, visiting
Mr. White and with friends and
relatives.
Dinner Honors Mr. Linnell
The Jim Barnett home was the
scene of a potluck dinner party
on Saturday evening for Don
Linnell. Mr. Linnell is quoted as
saying it was his 29th birthday!
Guests included Mr. and Mrs.
Linnell; Mr. and Mrs. Barnett;
Mr. and Mrs. John Eubanks;
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Palmateer; Mr.
and Mrs. Roy W. Lindstrom and
Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Connor.
Elbe Akers spent the week
end in Portland with Mrs. Akers
and Danny to check on Danny's
progress. Danny is still confined
to Doernbecher hospital but has
been taken off the surgery list
for the present time.
Mrs. Pete Cannon was hos
tess for the bridge club at her
home last Thursday. Receiving
high was Mrs. Walter Jacobs,
second high went to Mrs. Ray
Boyce and low to Mrs. Ernie Mc
Cabe. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Harryman
and family are in the process
of moving into the house re
cently vacated by the Darrel
Reisches. Mr. Harryman is lone
High's new superintendent.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wright of
Baker and Mr. and Mrs. Guy
Wright and son Ronnie of Bates,
are visiting with Mrs. Ida Grab
il this week for a few days.
Mr. and Mrs. Tony Martin and
family of Sacramento, Calif., are
visiting her sister and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rice. Mr.
Martin will help in harvest at
the Rice ranch.
H.E.C. Meets Friday
Home Economic club will meet
this Friday, July 20, at the
Grange hall at 2:00 p.m. with
Mrs. Al Marick and Mrs. Stella
O'Meara as co-hostesses.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Drake and
daughters of Tillamook visited
in lone and Heppner this past
week with relatives. They re
turned home during the week
end and Mr. Drake came back
to Portland where he was met
by his brother Bob and the two
returned to lone. Ernie will bo
employed at the Ray Heimbig-
ner ranch during harvest.

The Dalles General hospital fol
lowing a heart attack last week
while there picking cherries.
Lonnie McCabe and Leland Mc-
Kinney went to The Dalles to
bring Mrs. McCabe and the car
home. She is the only visitor
allowed to see him and at
present will not allow him
flowers, however, cards may be
sent.
Mr. and Mrs. Hershal Town-
send and Mr. and Mrs. George
Portschv went to Bond on Sun
day to visit with Mr. and Mrs.
Rav Ried and family, a sister
of Mrs. Townsend. They al.;o
stopped to visit at Peterson's
Gardens.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Clark and
daughter Ann and her - friend
Sherry of San Jose, Calif, visited
recently at the homes ot Mr. and
Mrs. Garland Swanson, Mr. and
Mrs. Clell Rea, Mrs. Arvilla
Swanson. Mrs. Mary Swanson
and other relatives, on their wav
home from the Worlds Fair in
Seattle. Also visiting was his
sister, Mrs. Mildred Walters also
of San Jose.

family, her mother, Mrs. Mar
garet Ingram and her grand
mother Mrs. Diane Ingram of
Springfield, and her sister Mar-
lene Ingram ot Las vegas, inov.
visited at the Garland Swanson
home this past week. Mrs. Swan
son and family remained to be
with her husband and in-laws
while her family returned to
their respective homes.

At Water Follies

Heimbigner and family, Mrs.
Lewis Halvorsen and sons
Frank and Mark attended the
Washington State Open Ski
Championship at Columbia Park
in connection with the Tri-City
Water Follies during the week
end. The Heimbigner family was
in attendance Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, while the Halvor-
sens only participated on Saturday.
Frank Halvorsen placed second
In the junior boy's jump for
water skiing and received a
trophy. This division was for the
12 year age group.
Tom Heimbigner entered the
12-18 year-old group for jump
ing and for slolom trick, placing
third in his division and re
ceiving a trophy.
Mr. Heimbigner entered the

Mr. and Mrs. Karl Miller re
ceived word of the arrival of
a baby daughter at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Gene O'Brien
on July 2 at Milwaukie. She
has been named Molly Jan.
Mrs. O'Brien Is the former
Marlene Baldwin and is the
daughter of Mrs. Miller.

ting for a reunion picnic of the
Van Winkle relatives on Sun
day. Those going from Lexing
ton were Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie
Ledbetter and girls, and Mr. and

They met Mr. and Mrs. A. E.
Van Winkle from Spokane, Wn
whose three daughters, Phyllis,
Rosemary and Janice had spent
the past week visiting in Lex
ington. Their other daughter,
Susan, is here with her grand
parents this week. Following the
picnic, Mr. and Mrs. Ledbetter
motored to Cove where their
daughter, Jeanette, is spending
a week at the Christian church
summer camp.

Peck, was taken quite ill and
was rushed to a hospital in Port
land by Millard Nolan and E. E.

this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Hender
son attended the opening of Air
ways, Incorporated at Pendle
ton airport Sunday and met their
son, Ladd, who was enroute
home from Walla Walla. While
there they visited Neil White
who Is a patient in St. Anthony's
hospital.

the proud parents of a daughter,
Jana Lee, born in Pioneer Mem
orial hospital on July 4,
Lexington Grange met for
their regular meeting on Satur
day evening. The maeting was
presided over by Master Alvin
Wagenblast. Following the meet
ing, songs were sung, led by
lecturer, Mrs. Kenneth Smouse,
and closed with refreshments.
Ukiah Greets Hughes
With Housewarming
Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Hughes
and son, Merlin, formerly of
Heppner, were honored at their
new ranch home in Ukiah Sun
day afternoon, July 15, with a
community housewarming pot
luck dinner.
Sixty friends called to extend
greetings, presenting the Hughes
with a cake and fir tree dec
orated with money.
Co-hostesses were Mr. and
Mrs. Cleve Hinton, Mr. and Mrs.
Dick Brehm and Mr. and Mrs.
