Bows to Vikings
In Season Finale
Umatilla's Vikings defeated
the Heppner Mustangs, 7 to 5
at Heppner on a rain-drenched
diamond in the final game of
the season for the home nine
Tuesday, May 8. The Mustang's
seasons record was three wins,
six losses.
The Vikings were helped by a
"leaky" Heppner infield which
committed eight errors. Umatilla
scored first with three runs in
its half of the first inning, aided
by two errors, a base on balls
and two hits.
In the second inning, two er
rors by the Mustangs gave the
Viks another boost and thev
scored two runs on only one hit
and a walk. In the third, the
visitors scored one on a walk, an
error and a hit. Kenny Smith,
Mustang pitcher, didn't allow an
other run until the seventh,
when an error and a hit scored
the Vikings' final tally.
Shutout for the first three inn
ings, Heppner came to life in
the fourth and scored two on
three walks and one hit. Ladd
Dick and Dick Springer tallied.
In the fifth, LeRoy Gardner got
hit, stole second and then stole
third. The throw was high, and
he scored as the ball bounded
into left field.
Heppner picked up two more
runs in the sixth as Dick opened
the inning with a walk and
Springer singled. Carl Bauman
then singled home a run. The
Mustangs failed to score in the
last of the seventh inning, and
the game ended with the score
5 in favor ot Umatilla.
Kenny Smith gave up six hits,
five walks and struck out four
men in his losing cause. Del
Green on the hill for Umatilla

Over The
Tee Cup
By DEE GRIBBLE
The "tee brew" is weak this
week. The reason? The weather!
Who was it who said "you
can't please everybody," etc?
Well, he surely was right. With
overcast sky May 15, eight golf
ing gals turned out to play.
Donna won for most putts on
number 2, and Hester took hon
ors for long drive on number 8.
Lessons are almost over. John
asks all golfers that haven't com
pleted all the lessons to see him
Saturday or Sunday to finish. If
you missed a lesson now is the
time to make it up.
Heard the other day that Ed
Schaffilz is a very fanatical golf
er. Seems he was seen on the
course the other day with a
fellow pulling a chaise lounge
behind him. "What's the idea?"
asked C. C. Carmichael. "Why
is your caddie dragging that
couch all over the course?" Ed
snapped, "Caddie, my foot.
That's my psychiatrist."
Attention Men! More men are
urged to take advantage of play
on Sunday morning (with no
kids or wives cluttering up the
course.) Then in the afternoon,

it's everybody play!
One of the first rules of golf
is (I quote from National Golf
Foundation) "In all your play,
remember if you do not play
according to the rules of golf,
it isn't golf you're playing."
Learn the rules of our club. You
will have more fun on the course
and so will the other golfers.
Golf is like taxes you drive
hard to make the green and
then wind up in the "hole." Bye
now.
