Oi Escaped Chipmunk
L'er want to capture an

by, music (iiiitior ai Heppner
m tumlK, knows differently.
It all ktarted with a pair of
chipmunks captured at the
Cutsforth mountain .biii the
week end of July 4. They were
(ro'gy and easily caughi as
ihey Mire guttering from a gas
Onille uses in I. is atuc to
Ktep any strays from entering
the cabin.
They thrived in their cage
with the tender alien!. on of
the Iv.o Melbv daughters un
til last Saturday, wiien some
how the cage was open and
both escaped. .Neighbors, who
had had the experience, jaid
Ihey could not l.e caught.
Undauntedly the family
scurried back and forth In the
hot sun diking them this way
and that; finally the female,
Sissy, ran up on top of the cage
and jumped in the open door.
Not so with Frisky, the roam
ing male. He hit for the closest
woodpile. Following a half
hour of patient calling and
watching In the sweltering
sunshine the Melby parents
gave up, leaving the job of
curbing Frisky's freedom to
the duughters with the help
of neighborhood children.
Frisky made his way to the
tomato vines, where he ap
parently hid out In Hie shade
for another three quarters of
hour, while disappointed child
ren opened the door from time
to time to complain.
Finally the music man had
had enough. He went to the
yard, got his trusty hose, and
started administering water to
the tomato patch until the
ficcdom lover emerged at the
end closest the cage. Elder
daughter Kathy used a bath
towel to rescue Frisky and re
turn him to his cage, where
he Immediately disappeared in
his box and did not come out
until he had removed every
drop of water.
The chipmunk looked like a
drowned rat when caught, but
the method was effective.

THE
FOREST
ON
WEEKENDS
Foi-est fires menace most on weekends. More people are in the forest -and there's more
chance for man-caused fires to flare; more chance for destruction and terror!
It's a tragic and shameful fact that nine out often forest fires are man-caused-too often by
the carelessness of a "weekender" who thoughtlessly flips away a smoke or a glowing match.
So when you're in the forest over a weekend -careful.
Always follow Smokey Bear's rules:
Break matches -crush smokes be SURE all fires are out!
Remember
only YOU can prevent forest fires!
