Ski Club Has
Long Season
By KENNETH PECK
for Baldy Butte Ski Club
Skiing from early December
into April awaits the ski fans
who travel to the Blue Moun
tains of Morrow county south
east of Heppner. Enthusiastic
promoters of the winter sport are
members of Baldy Butte Ski
Club. Under their sponsorship a
new ski area development on the
northeast slope of Arbuckle
Mountain 27 miles from Heppner
is proposed. An application to
the Forest Service for a use per
mit has been filed.
The area may be easily reach
ed by a rock surfaced Forest
Service logging road usually
plowed free of snow. Base eleva
tion of the area is 5300 feet which
insures a dependable snow pack
of from 30 to 40 , inches of dry
snow.
The summit of Arbuckle Moun
tain is 6150 feet with additional
snow depth. The beginner area
will be served b a 500 foot rope
tow and ultimate development
of the area will see a T-bar or
plater type lift to the summit.
From here the skier will have
a chioce of downhill runs vary
ing from intermediate to expert
and up to a mile and more in
length.
From the summit of the moun
tain may be seen Mt. Hood, Mt.
Rainier, Mt. Adams, the Wal
lowas, the Anthonys, and the
Strawberry range. Sunsets from
this vantage point are long re
membered. Back at the base
shelter the skier may warm up
and enjoy good food. No over
night facilities are planned but
Heppner has several fine motels
for the skier who wishes to stay
several days.
Present ski facilities are at
Cutsforth Forest Park on Willow
Creek 21 miles from Heppner.
A rope tow and a warming hut
are provided. Nearby may be
found a sled run and ice skating
ponds. Visitors are always welcome.
