Of Home Ec Units
Meeting the challenges and
problems faced by today's wo
men to make better family liv
ing Is the aim of the home ec
onomics branch of the extension
service, according to Miss Esther
Kirmis, Morrow county agent..
The Extension Service Is a part
of the United States Department
of Agriculture working through
V..J. w
university at Corvallis Is the
state's land-grant college. The
county agent's office In Heppner
is like a long arm of OSU. The
agents, N. C. Anderson, Esther
.Kirmis, and Joe D. Hay, are con
sidered a part of Its faculty.
The home economics branch is
built around educational clubs,
called extension units. They are
like a class at OSU conducted in
the community. The County
Agent is the teacher; unit pro
ject leaders are her assistants.
"This gives women an oppor
tunity to continue their educat
ion and apply it in their own
home," states the home economist.
There are eight such clubs in
the county situated in Heppner,
lone, Lexington, Boardman, Irri
gon, Rhea Creek community, Pine
City community, and Lena com
munity. These women meet once
a month from September through
May to study problems in cloth
ing, foods and nutrition, family
life, family finance, home man
agement, home furnishings, and
recreation.

selects the subjects to be studied.
This year such topics as barbe
cuing, making smocked sofa pil
lows, ways with western vege
tables, creative use of a mix.
understanding teen-agers, short
cuts to house cleaning, ward
robe building, bathrwm and bed
room storage, and cheese cookery
will be studied.
Besides the unit projects there
will be a Morrow County "Red
Hat" dav for men and women
iterested in hunting, a four-
evening short course in January
on Understanding Boys and Girls, j
some dressmaking II workshops. I

area, and a tour to one of the 1

any program the agent has de
veloped. Workshops are conducted for
the purpose of teaching skills.
These are conducted In clothing,
foods and crafts, when there Is
sufficient Interest.
"We serve the women of Mor
row county In any phase of a
woman's life cycle," concludes
Miss Kirmis, "Whether she's
eight or 80, extension alms to
help people help themselves."
