Prevention of navel Ills In new
born pigs, Iambs, and calves Is
extremely Important. In the new
born animal the only avenue of
Infection Is thru the navel cord
which is broken at time of birth.
A ten percent iodine solution ap
plied at the cord will prevent a
lot of difficulties in the new born
animals such as peritonitis, pos
sibly scours, and many different
kinds of joint Ills.

Work done at the University
of Wyoming provides me good
rule for feeding cereal grains
suDDlementine some of the
roughage for wintering beef cat
tie. When grain Is fed with na
tive or grain hay a protein sup
plement was needed. If airaiia
hay was fed for one hair or
more of the roughage the mini
mum protein requirements could
be met when oats or barley re-
placed the hay. For beef animals
steam rolling or coarse grinding
of amall grains waa recommend
ed.
Figuring the cost of barley
comparing It with the hay here
are the calculations needed: A
reef cow should have 20 pounds
of hay per day or 10 pounds of
hay minimum when fed barley
to replace the roughage. One
pound of hay can be replaced by
0.61 pounds of barley. The dally
ration could be comprised of 10
pounds of hay and 6.4 pounds of

Five-dayWeek Observed by Banks throughout State
A five-day banking week is now being observed regularly by all
banks in Oregon. The five-day policy is the prevailing practice of
banks in the Western states as well as nationally.
Additional hours of banking service on Fridays or other week
days will be provided by many Oregon banks. Other conveniences
such as bank-by-mail, 24-hour depositories and speedy bank-from-your-car
facilities also enable five-day banking to suit your needs.
Your bank will appreciate having you discuss with them any
special problems resulting from Saturday closing.
