Booting Accidents
So For This Year
Claim 21 Lives
The Marine Roard in releasing
utliit- emptied from boating
mvi.l.-ii! rrtK.M ute that dur
ing the firt nine month of thl
yi-ar pleasure boatini: accident
in Oregon claimed .1 live.
The report luted mll out
board tt of les than 16 feet
in leniMh ai hnfi the majority
of Accident. Of the 104 accident
rcrxirt received. 70 were from
,,i.iti.r uf boat In that cate
gory. Bats between 16 and 26
feet In length were involved in
-n a.vi.tonla and thd6 OVCf .0
feet In length. 7 accident.
There were 7S collbdon re
txirted of which 5 Involved two
or more vessel. Fourteen case
of capsizing. 4 of pcron failing
overboard. 2 cae cf swamping
and 2 cf fire In outboard motor
boat reported. Water kkler were
Involved In 36 of the accidents.
Fourteen live were !t during
capollng, 4 from falling over
board, 2 while engaged In kl
Ing. and 1 from swamping. There
were 35 Injuries also reported.
The Marine Board study Indi
cates that the major causes of
boating accident are overload
ing the boat, making extremely
sharp turns, standing In a small
boat, boating In bad weather and
reckless operation which accoun
ted for some of the collisions.
The Board's study also Indicated
that. In all probability, 16 lives
would have been saved had the
victims, who were In small boats,
been wearing life preservers. On
the brighter side, the Marine
Board reports that, although
there was an Increase In pleasure
boating this year, there were less
lives lost than in 1959.
Boating laws and regulations,
while very necessary, will not
prevent casualties lf the boater
himself does not know or prac
tice the fundamentals of safe
boating. It Is the opinion of Mar
ine Board Director, Bob Rltten
house, who complied the report,
that the biggest Job now before
the Board Is to bring about the
practice of safe boating. The
Marine Board is now working on
several safety programs which
will begin this winter. It Is
the hope of the Board that the
boating public will take advan
tape of these and anv other edU'
catlonal programs available that
will help decrease boating acci
dents.
