Summer is outdoor cooking
time. Whether you picnic in one
of Oregon's parks or In your
own back yard, the time to con
sider food for outdoor eating Is
here. Outdoor eating is a pop
ular nationwide custom. More
than 80 of American families
eat outdoors at some time dur
ing the year, according to a re
cent survey reported by Chain
Store Age. The majority of fam
ilies eat outside between one and
three times a month on an an
nual average.
Eating outside Is likely to be
most popular with families
where the homemakers are un
der 35 years of age and least
popular with those 55 years and
over according to another re
port. Families with five or more
persons eat outdoors most fre
quently. Families of one or two
eat outside less often. Over half
of the outdoor meals are served
to six or more persons, while
more than 90 are served to four
or more.
Survey lists popular picnic
items. Foods most likely to ap
pear at picnics include: pickles,
white bread, butter or margarine,
sauces and tomatoes, according
to Chain Store Age. These items
appear in at least 3 out of 4
picnics. Other leading items In
clude: potato chips, olives, cook
ies, coffee, cake, bottled drinks,
milk and cheese. Of the meats,
hamburgers, and frankfurters are
included in half of the picnics.
Among fruits, bananas are the
most popular picnic selection,
while tomatoes lead the vege
tables. Prepare your cook-outs. Out
door meals need as careful plan
ning as other meals. Don't short
change your family on health
giving proteins, vitamins, and
minerals by just packing a bas
ket with hot dogs, potato chips,
pop, and marshmallows. It's wise
to plan only two courses.
