Aa haying time grows near
there are always qu-tlns con
cerning the best time to cut hay
for highest pro!'" and other de
sirable nutrltlenls and a mini
mum amount of the undesirable
nutrients. The college working
with the state department of
sericulture Is developing a hay
testing program aimed at aiding
consumers In their feeding pro
gram and hav nroducers in mar
keting their hay. By late fall It
Is planned to have an education
al program prepared for the
county. In the meantime, a re
cent article on hay researcn
points out that each week you
delay harvest of your forage
after It reaches the early bua
or bloom stage costs you money
at and with $40. per ton leea
ini value this week may be
worth only half as much i
month from now. Young lmma
ture forage In the bud or very
onrlv bloom staee Is hign in
nroteln. Digestibility Is at
Deak too while fiber Is low. As
the croD matures, quality drops
off quite rapidly. Fiber increases
from 20 at the early Dioom
stage up to nearly 50 at ma
turity. Cattle do not like high
fiber hay, they won't get as
much of It and It won't produce
half the meat or mux tney
would on forage cut at the leafy,
hlch protein stage. Peak quality
may last ony a week; a ton of
hay cut at the early bloom stage
and carefully harvested will
have from 18 to 20 protein.
That's the equivalent of 400
oounds of protein purchased In
the bag. By the time the forage
matures, protein is down to 127
protein with the value cut al
most In half.

A reminder from Ralph Clark,
extension horticulture specialist,
OSC that trees not making a
normal healthy growth should
ave additional food. Nitrogen Is
usually the only element that
gives a visible response, however,
complete fertilizer that runs
heavy to nitrogen is often used
In feeding trees. A good system
is to measure the diameter of
the tree at the three foot level.
For young trees up to 6 Inches
In diameter use 1 pound per
Inch and for larger trees use 3
Dounds ner inch. Then spread
(lie fertilizer In a broad band out
at the drip line of the tree. If
the tree is In a lawn or on a
slope It is best to bore holes
use a punch bar and make
holes 12 to 18 Inches deep. Start
out 2 feet from the tree and
make a circle of holes two feet
apart out to the drip line or a
foot bevond this point. A ten-
six-four fertilizer Is very good or
you can use a straight 20 nit
rogen fertilizer such as ammon
ium sulphate. Early spring is
the proper time to fertilize trees
nd shrubs. Water should be
dded after fertilizing. Some
times water Is also a limiting
factor, especially If part of the
area near the tree is covered
by sidewalk, driveway or street.
It usually takes a garden hose
running for an hour to wet down
six Inches.
