school superlnte ndent's
wife went to Texas in 1945 and
left five little 4-H girls stranded.
Someone had to take over," de
clares Mrs L A McCabe, lone.
Oregon, In her matter-of-fact
way, "and with my own daugh
ter, one of the five, guess who
got elected?"
That pretty well tells the be
ginning of the 15 years of 411
club leadership of Ruth McCabe,
lone farmwife, who was recog
nized for her outstanding a
chievement at the filth annual
4-H leaders banquet of Morrow
county on January 6 at the
American Legion hall. County
agents N C Anderson and Esther
Klrmis presented her with a
pearl clover pin, a symbol of 15
years of 4-H leadership.
Looking back over the 15 con
tinuous years of leadership, Mrs
McCabe recalls the faces of some
45 girls who were enrolled in
the program under her. Records
in the county agent's office show
these girls carried close to 150
projects in clothing, foods, food
preservation, and home improvement.
"The majority of them are now
married and have families of
their own," comments this amaz
ing mother of five, "I have a
great pride in them as I see
them take their place in our
community ae homemakers and
leaders."
it Is interesting to note that
four of the first five members
are living in the county or near
by. Mrs Dean Rohde (Ruby Ann
Rietmann) lives in Echo, Mrs
Tnmnc Ppttvlohn (Lola Ann Mc
Cabe), Mrs Robert Crowell (Lila
Botts), Mrs Eldon Tucker (Pat
ricia Drake) in lone; and Mrs
Ronald Tye (Jane Seehafer) lives
in Enterprise.
Mrs McCabe's roots are set
Anpn in Morrow county. She was
born on Rhea Creek, the daugh
ter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Keene,
Hpr grandfather. V T
Campbell came to the county in
1886 and served as county juage
for 8 years.

"It didn't take long, after I was

that I should take care of some
nine and ten-year-olds who
wanted to Join her "overflowing"
club. That's how I got Into the
game and have been leading a
,club for eight years now."
A person would think Mrs Mc
Cabe had little time for other
activities, but one finds that she
is a charter member of the lone
extension unit, in fact, it was
through a petition started by the
Farm Bureau (who became con
vinced by Ruth's campaigning)
that a home extension agent was
voted Into the county budget.
She served a term as a member
of the county advisory council
for the county extension women
and also held several major or
flees in the Bunchgrass Rebekah
lodge of lone.

main hobby, but when you talk
