lature before the repeal of the
old free-scholarship law must

NATIONAL DEBT CEILING
Sen Wavne Morse, Sen Clarke
(Dem. Pa.) and seven other spon
sors have introduced a bill which
would lower the national debti
ceiling by $20 billion rather than
raise the ceiling as proposed by
President Eisenhower.
The National debt problem will
be a "batter ud" issue with
many senatorial candidates on
both sides of the political field,
during the 1960 presidential cam
paign.
Beef Council For
Oregon Receives
Legislative OK
An Oregon Beef Council, sun
ported by voluntary fees and for
Dromotion of beef on a state
wide basis, was authorized by
the 1959 legislature and will be
come effective October l, this
year.
The seven-man Council, com
posed of three cattlemen, two
dairymen, one handler and one
feeder, will be appointed by the
governor from recommendations
submitted by the various pro
ducer groups.
Backers of this legislation,
now chapter 685 Oregon laws,
were the Oregon Cattlemen's
association, the Western Oregon
Livestock association and the
Oregon Dairymen's association.
In addition to statewide pro
motion in. Oregon, the sponsors
are hopeful that the Oregon
group will be able to cooperate
with other beef councils on a
regional basis. The law also
authorizes support of the Nat
ional Beef Council and the Nat
ional Livestock and Meat Mark
eting Board program.
"SuDDort of this program will
be absolutely voluntary, with no
strines attached, but we hone for
the support of the entire beef
industry of the state," says Ted
Hvde of Blv. Hyde is chairman
of the beef promotion committee
of the Oregon Cattlemen s assoc
iation.
He points out that the volun
tary contributions will be made
uniformly at the rate of 10 cents
per head collected with the
brand inspection fee through co
operation of the selling agencies
and the state department 01
agriculture.
Beef producers voted down a
compulsory assessment for pro
motion two years ago when ma
jor arguments advanced against
that move were that support
should be on a voluntary basis
and promotion should be tied
in with regional and national
programs.

This week Gary Tullis was our
leader. He will be our leader
the rest of this year.
Our meeting was at the Tullis
ranch. We discussed how we were
going to make money for the
club. It was decided to have a
horse ride at the cost of 10c for
those who are under 6 and 15c
for those over six.
We talked about the clothes
we are to wear too, but that was
not decided and the meeting was
adjourned.
