12 HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES. Thursday, June 11. 1959 Services Held For Dell Neal In Monument By MARTHA MATTESON Services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p m at the Community church In Monument for Delman Riley Neal, known to everyone as Dell, who passed away Sat urday evening, May 30 at his home, on the donation land claim six miles west of Monu ment of his grandparents, Wil liam (Billy) and Mahalla Neal. Dell was born June 7, 1883 in Jefferson, Marion County, Ore gon. He passed away just a few days before his 54th wedding anniversary and 76th birthday. Billy Neal was the first settler to drive a wagon into this region. The Neals came here from their home in Marion county, through Heppner in 1868 Dell Neal was the youngest son of Napolean Bonaparte "Poly" and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Munkers Neal. Billy, the grandfather, vas ac tive in establishing public schools and building the foun dation for the present govern ment of this area. At one time Polly, Billy's youngest son, was one of the largest stockmen of the country. Father and son were associated in business through the father's life time. Following family trad i t i o n Polly and Dell, his youngest son, continued operation of that busi ness. Leo and Fred, older brothers of Dell, operated portions of the original claim. Each preceeded him in death. Still following family tradition, Dell and his son Lewis (Mannle) have operated the remaining por tion of the Billy Neal land claim. For the greater part of a cen tury the Neal place and dam have been noted through the northwest for its hospitality. Many people reserved vacations for hunting and fishing seasons to take advantage of the "open latch string" type home and the many joy filled nights around the Neal's campfire in the hunt ing camps. It is doubtful a key has been used In the door of this home. Dell has been well known for his kind heartedness and pleas ant disposition. With his wife Belle, he has always made the best of any situation. Through out their 54 years of marriage Belle and Dell have shared bur dens and pleasures as a perfect team, have always been able to make allowances for the Short comings of others. Greater toler ance has never been known. On June 4, 1905, Mr Neal was married to Ora Belle Sweek at the ranch home of her parents, Lawrence (Lime) and Emily Harding Sweek by the Rev S L Clark. Episcopal services were con ducted by the Rev Richard Payne of John Day. Honorary pallbear ers were Martin Cupper, Murd Stubblefield, Frank Elder, M C Merrell, George Capon, Gayle De Will, Miles Gllman and Alton McBrlde. Pallbearers were Boyd Hlnton, L D Vinson, Dean En right, Harold Cork, Gene Camp bell and Charles Roach.
