lone Extension Units Study Barbecuing Tricks

The lone Extension Unit held
an all day meeting at the home
or Mrs Norman Nelson Thurs
day, May 7. The subject was
Barbecuing." Members were di
vided into four groups to prepare
tne meal. The main dish was
Damecued chicken. Kabobs of
meat and fruits, sliced potatoes
baked in foil, corn in foil, garlic
bread, salad and cherry dump
lings were also made. The dem
onstrators were Mrs Elmer Holtz
and Mrs Art Warren. There were
17 present. This will be the last
meeting until September.
College students home from
EOCE in La Grande over the
weekend were Dick Ekstrom, Ro
bert Hubbard and Kay Sherer.
Mrs Ekstrom and daughter ac
companied them home.
Mr and Mrs Harold Sherer and
daughter, Judy, attended the Pea
Festival in Milton-Free water
Saturday where their daughter,
Kay, a princess of the Collegiate
rodeo, rode in a car in the parade
with the other princesses.
Mr and Mrs Gaylord Salter and
daughter, Jodi, visited at the
home" of his parents, Mr and Mrs
Hugh Salter recently. They
brought Jodi home from a hos
pital in Portland where she was
a patient for 10 days.
Mr and Mrs Leland McKinney
spent Sunday at the home of Mr
and Mrs Willard Barnett in Grass
Valley. Mr and Mrs Earl Mc
Kinney and son Allan, of Her
miston were also visitors there.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Lun
dell and daughters, Karen and
Cheryle, spent a few days last
week in Forest Grove where Kar
en took part in the "Music in
May" at the Pacific University
there. She was a piano accom
panist for a chorus of 230 voices
at the final concert Saturday ev
ening. While in Forest Grove the Lun
dells visited her brother and sister-in-law,
Mr and Mrs Robert
McCabe.
The study meeting of the Top
ic club met at the home of Mrs
Charles Carlson Friday afternoon,
May 8 with Mrs Fannie Griffith
and Mrs Roland Bergstrom as
co-hostesses, At the business
meeting conducted by Mrs John
Proudfoot, members answered
the roll by naming a program
suggestion for next year. Sug
gestions were on the study of
Indians of Morrow county., on
Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, art and
music. Mrs Griffith gave a re
port on the book, "Masters of
Deceit", by J Edgar Hoover,
which is on communism in the
United States. The June meet
ing will be held at the home of
Mrs Victor Rletmann and a book
shower will be held for the pub
lic library.
At the meeting of Bunchgrass
Rebekah lodge Thursday evening
of last week, $5 was given to
the Red Cross. Mrs Wallace Mat
thews gave a report on attend
ing the reception for state offi
cers at the IOOF home in Port
land, May 3. She and Mr Mat
thews, also visited Charles and
George Ely, residents of the
home. Refreshments were served
after the meeting by Mrs E R
Lundell, Mrs Mary Swanson and
Mrs Cleo Drake.
Mrs Kenneth Smouse gave a
party Wednesday afternoon, May
6 in honor of her son, Carl's 8th
birthday. Others present were
Karen and Keith Nelson, Kristen
Nelson, Kathy and Monty Crum,
Frank Halvorsen, Sandy Einspar,
Cherllyn and Kenneth Smouse Jr,
Kenneth Nelson, Mrs Alfred Nel
son, Mrs Ralph Crum, Mrs Anne
Smouse, Mrs Ella Burgoyne. The
children played outdoor games
and refreshments were served.
Mrs Roy Lindstrom spent a
few days last week in Portland.
The American Legion Auxil
iary held their meeting at the
Legion hall Tuesday afternoon,
May 5 with Mrs Robert Rietmann
and Mrs Victor Rietmann as hos
tesses. At the business meeting
conducted by Mrs C E Brenner,
president, a letter was read from
Paula Barak thanking the Unit
for choosing her as a delegate
to Girl's State. Mrs John Eubanks
reported that 58 paper flowers
were sent to the Veteran's hos
pital in Portland. Poppy corsages
will be made at the next meet
ing the evening of May 19. These

Jeanette Lulan, daughter of Mr
and Mrs Gilbert Lujan, under
went a tonsillectomy Wednesday
of last week at the Pioneer Mem
orial hospital.
Kenneth Jones, son of Mr and
Mrs Lawrence Jones, was one
of the Tri-county trapmen in the
Journal Telegraphic Trapshoot
ing in Portland last week. He
made a score of 100. The Jones'
other son, Lawrence Jr, of Con
don made a score of 96.
Mrs Marion Palmer was hon
ored with a birthday party at
the home of Mrs Harold Dobyns

had charge of the games and
Mrs Lee Palmer and Mrs Harold
Sherer assisted with the enter
taining. Those winning prizes- at the
games were Mrs Garry Tullis,

The lone Garden club had a
successful plant, food and pie
and coffee sale at the Rebekah
hall Saturday afternoon.
Plans have been made- for a
Fireman's dance to be held at the
Legion hall, May 30. The pro
ceeds will go toward purchasing
some fire equipment. Ernest Mc
Cabe is chairman of the dance
and Charles O'Connor is chair
man of the refreshments. James
Barnett is the fire chief.
Captain and Mrs Bruce Smith
and son, Michael, of Fayetteville,
N C are visiting at the home
of his parents, Mr and Mrs Dixon
Smith. Captain Smith is in the
Air Force and is on a leave. -

Matthews and daughters spent
the weekend in Portland. Berl
Akers Jr, a student at Pacific
University, met them In Portland.

Melvin Martin and Phil Emert
Jr were elected to go to Beaver
Boys State In Corvallis in June
at a recent American Legion
meeting. Eligibility is based on
leadership, co-operati v e n e s s,
scholarship, honesty and courage.
Melvin is the son of Mr and
Mrs Fredrick Martin and Phil
is the son of Mr and Mrs Phil
Emert. Both are juniors in the
lone high school.
Mr and Mrs G V Crumb of
Morton, Wash spent the weekend
here. They brought her mother,
Mrs Grace Ware, back to her
home here. She has been visiting
at the Crumb home for a few
weeks.

children spent Sunday with her
parents, Mr and Mrs C L Lieu

utes. Eubanks rode three and

Dalles club rode to Arlington. The
Umatilla Sage Riders picked up
the express at Boardman and
rode to Pendleton. A speed cop
escorted them.
Mrs Anna M Ball wrote an ar
ticle on Chloromone, a liquid
plant rooting hormone scientific
product for the Garden Magazine
section of the Sunday Journal
which will come out May 17. She
is a distributor for this article
in seven western states.

called to hear the report of
the pulpit committee, to take
action upon the report and
transact any other necessary
business. Everyone is urged
to attend.

for Robin Martina Hausler at
the Community church Sunday
morning with Dr Earle Cochran,
of Pendleton officiating, assisted
by Robert DeSpain. Dr Cochran
also, had charge of the morn

day at the church and 11 com
plete families attended. The
largest were the Joe Hausler
family of 7 and the Lewis Halv
orsen family of 6. Others were
the Roy Llndstroms, the Alfred
Nelsons, the Fredrick Martins,
the Kenneth Smouses, the Paul
Pettyjohns, the Garry Tullis', the
Milton Morgans, the Norman Nel
sons, and the Earl McCabes.
