is This the Mark of Honesty?
THE FACTS:
Governor Robert D. Holmes called a special session of the Leg
islature to cut taxes.
Governor Robert D. Holmes' bold leadership resulted in tax re
ductions. ' i&'&Sfl
Over 330,000 Oregon Taxpayers have received tax refunds.
This is the record of action and accomplishment by the Demo
cratic Holmes administration.
BUT
Here Is What GOP Candidate Mark Hatfield Is Saying Today:
Hatfield said in Linn county" that State Treasurer Sig Unander, a Republican, de
serves the credit for suggesting a special session, and that the Republican party
deserves the credit for cutting taxes (Reported in the Salem Capital Journal,
92558).
Here Is What Mark Hatfield Said About Unander And The Spec
ial Session:
"It would be my suggestion that we not raise our hopes that taxes can be reduced. .
Legislators must take a cold, hard look at the surplus before spending it or obli
gating it in any way. Otherwise the surplus" may be a mirage that Is really the
quicksand of deficit," - Hatfield in the Oregonian, 72457.
". . . an insult to the intelligence of the voter to put forth verbal garbage "
Hatfield referring to Slg Unander in the Oregonian, 5358.
Here Is What Other Leading RepubUcans Said About The Tax
Reduction Session:
"It is likely that pressure group-stimulated spending will disperse the state sur
plus with little if any tax" reductions. . . Unneeded and hastily written laws will
result." - State GOP Chairman Jim Short in the Oregon Statesman, 72557.
"It (the special session call) is in the category of pressure politics." - Former
Governor Elmo Smith in the Oregon Journal, 72457.
-My fear is the surplus will be expended and the taxpayer will not receive any
substantial relief since there Is no way of limiting the scope of legislation."
GOP Senator Howard Bolton in the Oregon Journal, 72457.
'. . . another premeditated political maneuver on the part of Governor Holmes."
GOP Representative Wayne Giesy in the Oregon Journal. 72457.
