Foster Seed Testing
Service Set at OSC;
Quick Test Developed
Faster seed testing service for
Oregons multl million dollar
grass and legume seed Industry
was announced this week by
Oregon State college agricultural
experiment station.
A new quick test for "live
seed", plus an increased staff of
technicians, is expected to cut
testing time during the peak
September period, reports Mrs
Louisa Jensen, technician in
charge of the OSC seed labora
tory. Tests for seed purity, formerly
causing time lags up to four
weeks, should be completed with
in two or three days this year
with addition of six technicians,
Mrs Jensen stated.
Seed germination tests require
one to four weeks, varying with
types of seed. However, seed via
bilityclosely related to seed
germination can be measured
in one-day service with the new
quick test. While official . seed
certification requires the longer
germination test, Mrs Jensen said
the quick method should be val
uable to both buyers and sellers
wanting Immediate information
on percentage of "live seed."

Key to the quick test Is a color
less stain, tetrazolium, that turns
red through chemical reaction
with enzymes in live seed of
grasses, legumes, and vetches. It
is effective even on dormant
seed.
The OSC laboratory, official
state testing station for Oregon,
operates on a fee basis and con
ducts tests on 15,000 to 20,000
seed samples annually.
A Discussion Of
Aphids Control
R E SMITH
A survey showed that all dam
age caused by insects in one
year amounted to 1 '4 trillion
dollars. Whew!
The same survey showed that
benefits from useful Insects in
pollination amounted to 3 trillion
dollars.
Therefore the value of bene
ficial insects is such that, with
out their services, we would go
down at a rate equal to three
times all government debt each
; year, (and starve to boot, for
i there would occur a famine in
over 60 farm crops.)
How can you spray with least
damage to these valuable in
sects? One suggestion - spray
while the crop is not in bloom.
Spray poison should never be ap
plied to forage crops unless there
is a reasonable growing period
after the poison Is applied. Other
wise you may as well poison
your animals directly.
Spray with the poison having
least residual effect, and of low
est toxicity, that will do the job.
Spray when the insects are not
in the fields. Early morning and
evening are best because of wind
conditions, also. And finally,
warn nearby beekeepers, for they
may wish to take measures to
protect their bees. Give them a
weeks notice, if possible.
