ROCK HOUNDS
(Continued Horn page 2)
When it came time to dish up
the ice cream, we found there
were 27 present. George found he
had to knock the dust off dishes
and spoons that hadn't been used
for some time.
George really did it again, this
time on woods. Not the type for
boat building, although it might
have been ideal a few hundred
thousand years ago, such as the
petrified forests of California. It
has been proven that it was not
just one forest, but fifteen full
grown mature forests buried one
upon the other. Take the Red
woods of today, some 2000 years
old multiply that by 15016 and it
statrcers the imagination. Allow
time between lava flows for
vegetation to start, what have
you? That was just one of the
manv enlightening or puzzling
things he brought out about
woods.
Then from scenic pictures he
showed he had a previous love
before taking up rocks, some of
those pictures were second to
none. Thanks George it was good.
The Evans have invited the
club to meet at their place the
first meeting after the rush sea
son is over. The third Saturday
in September. If the weather
remains as warm as it was at
the last meeting I would suggest
you conceal a bathing suit be
neath vour clothing so u some
one hollers, th last one in is a
negro baby, you want to be it.
For as I remember, the pool is
spot lighted and someone might
flip the switch and it mignt De
embarrasing if you tried a short
cut.
If I find nothing more to write
about someone else will inform
you how the display at the fair
and also at Lvtrn's came our.

Columbia Wheat Rate
Over Itana in Oregon
Itana, a new hard red winter
bread-type wheat released for
some areas of the Northwest, will
not be recommended for Ore
gon, it was announced this week
by D D Hill, Oregon State col
lege farm crops department head.
Itana is similar to Columbia
wheat released three years ago
in Oregon as a hard red winter
variety for low rainfall areas.
Columbia is more smut resistant
and higher yielding than Itana
under Oregon growing condit
ions, Hill stated.
Washington State college this
week released Itana for areas of
less than 10 inches rainfall in
Washington. Certified seed for
commercial production in Wash
ington will be available In the
fall of 1959.
The new wheat is a selection
from the cross Blackhull-Rex X
Cheyenne made at the Oregon
State college branch experiment
station at Moro. Testing began
in scattered areas of the North
west in 1950. Idaho and Montana
released Itana in 1956.
Columbia is resistant to all
known races of both common
and dwarf smut and has usually
outyielded Rio, the i commonly
grown hard red winter wheat in
the Columbia Basin. Because of
Columbia's excellent perfor
mance in Oregon's low-rainfall
areas, Hill stated, there is no
point in releasing Itana in Ore
gon.
