Good Crop Year
Seen for State
In OSC Outlook
Crops should be good in Ore
gon this year, in line with good
crop reports from across the na
tion. That's the outlook in the May
crop report put out by the U S
department of agriculture, re
ports Mrs Elvira Horrell, exten
sion agricultural economist at
Oregon State college.
Oregon's winter wheat crop
will probably be larger than last
year, falling only slightly short
of the 1952 and 1953 peak years,
Mrs Horrell said. Nationally, an
other billion bushel winter
wheat crop also third largest on
record is expected.
Looking at other crops, Mrs
Horrell found that Oregon's rye
crop was a little better on May
1 than a year earlier. And pas
tures in the state were in better
condition than a year ago, but
the condition of tame hay in
the state was a little under that
of last May. Nationally, the con
dition of the rye crop was re
ported the best in most report
ers' memories, and hay and for
age crop prospects were said to
average the best in more than
three decades.
Fruit production prospects
were also examined in the re
port. Strawberries in Oregon may
be down as much as 16 percent
from the record 1957 output due
to reduced acreages and slightly
lower yield prospects. The nat
ional strawberry crop is expect
ed to be down only 1 percent
below last year's record. The
sweet cherry condition In Oregon
is much better this year than
last, with the sour cherry con
dition down a little but still
above average.
