Wright of Heppner have been
named members of Talons, soph
omore honor society at Oregon
State college. Participation in
campus affairs and high schol
arship are required for member
ship. Only one coed is chosen for
the honorary from each women's
living group on campus.
Miss Kononen is majoring in
business and technology. She is
the daughter of Mrs Kay Cox
of Heppner.
Miss Wright is majoring in
science. Her parents are Mr and
Mrs Walter W Wright of Hepp
ner. Both are 1957 graduates of
Heppner high school.

Africa Missionary
To Speak Friday
Rev James Kessler, returned
missionary from Ghana, Africa,
will speak at the Assembly of
God church, Friday, May 23rd,
7:45 pm, Rev Willis Geyer, pastor
has announced.
A full color film. "Ghana
Gold", will also be shown. Rev
and Mrs Kessler recently con
cluded their first missionary
term In Ghana. They are the
son-in-law and daughter of Rev
and Mrs Otis Tripplet, pastors of
the Assembly of God in Milton-
Freewater.

on Chapin Creek.
As instructive entertainment
of thp evening, Hubert gave a
short talk on agates. The Creator
received credit for their for
mation and man has classified
them in four groups.
I'm a little late in mention
ing our guests Mr and Mrs
Hilsberg, Mr and Mrs Babb and
Stanley Minor. Mr Babb gave
a short talk, and while not an
authority on gems or minerals
he is interested in them having
started out when lapidary equip
ment was less available than it
is totlav. His first saw. a disk of
Russian iron cut out by a friend
and charged with diamond dust
or chips by himself. They spent
the winter in Arizona enjoying
the sunshine and picking up fine
stones. He displayed a stone
which he had found but could
not classify. While visiting a
show he asked six dilterent ex
perts to classify it, receiving six
different answers which led him
to believe the classification was
not so important if the stone
was beautiful or rare or it holds
something of interest. Arizona is
a very fertile field for rock picK
prs and he disDlaved some beau
tiful tumbled species of fire opal
and desert roses, also a number
of Oregon jasper. Mr and Mrs
Babb are now members oi our
club.

Fire Destroys Home
And Contents Near
Boardman Monday
An early morning fire of un
known origin completely de
stroyed the house on the former
Gib Califf place in the east end
Monday. The farm was purchas
ed about a month ago by L G
(Rocky) Keller, who was away
from home when the fire started.
He had gone to Irrigon Sunday
evening to borrow a truck to put
up his hay, and had spent the
night there. He started home
about 4 am and saw the smoke
from the fire. The fire was first
seen about 4:15 by Harold Kress,
who lives near there.
Keller stated that the build
ing was covered by insurance,
but contents were only partially
covered.
A washing machine, air con
ditioner and other things be
longing to Mr and Mrs Bobble
Stewart stored in the basement
were destroyed.
LEAVES FOR HOME
Lee Colley and daughter Lin
da left Saturday by plane for
their home in Casa Grande, Ari
zona. He has been in this vi
cinity since February operating
the Roy Putman spraying busi
ness, as Putman was injured In
a plane crash and unable to
work.
Colley is the son of Mr and
Mrs Charles M Colley of Lexington.

Hawk of Kennewick he has for
sale what he thinks to be some
of the best arrowheads to be
found anywhere at $17 per 100,
with 300 limit. His ad says they
were picked up from the desert
of Old Mexico by sheepherders.
Betty wound up the program
with a picture of California high-
ways. It was history of Calif
ornia from the early trails be
tween missions to the present
super highways, many of them
following the old trails.
Local Horses to
Show at Salem
Morrow county horses and
their owners will participate
when the Arabian Horse Breed
ers association of Oregon and
Salem Jaycees stage the 12th
annual All-Arabian Horse show
at the state fairgrounds here
June 21-22.
Celebrated as the oldest single
breed show of its kind on the
Pacific Coast, the event is dedi
cated to the world's only pure
strain of horse which has been
preserved nearly 4000 years.
Known as basic stock for near
ly every popular breed of horse
today, Arabians are easily rec
ognized by their delicate heads,
graceful bodies, stamina and a
versatility unrivalled in the
horse world.
While the show will attract
exhibitors and their mounts
from all over the country, Mor
row county will be represented
by Mr and Mrs Don Robinson
of the Sand Hollow Hereford
Ranch, Heppner.
Purpose of the annual Oregon
Arabian show is to give exhib
itors and breeders a chance to
show off their mounts and to
give the public a chance to see
this oldest of all horses demon
strate his beauty and ability.
The two-day show next month
will draw more than 200 Arab
ians who will be featured in 31
events including all phases of
show horse competition.
SUMNER IN OSC PLAT
OREGON STATE COLLEGE
Jay Sumner of Heppner will play
one of the supporting roles in
the Oregon State play, "See
How They Run," May 22 to 24.
The college speech department
presents six plays a year. "See
How They Run," a humerous
three-act London stage success,
will be the last one this year.
Sumner is a freshman in engineering.

TENNESSEE SCHOOL
HSAA Jessie D Smallwood, son
of Mrs Leona Smallwood of
Heppner, has passed all his tests
at the training center at Norman,
Oklahoma and is now studying
electronics at the Naval Air
Technical training center at
Memphis, Tenn. He will go to
school for five months and will
then be home on leave.

to her home in Vale Friday, af
ter a weeks visit at the home of
her son and daughter-in-law, Mr
and Mrs Roice Fulleton.
Pvt Bob Buschke, who has just
completed basic training in the
army, has been home on leave
from Fort Ord, Calif. He is the
son of Mr and Mrs Claude Bus
chke of Heppner and he return
ed to California last weekend.
Mrs Joe Stewart and Linda
were in Eugene over the week
end to attend Junior Weekend
at the University of Oregon and
visit with the Stewart's daugh
ters, Mary Jo and Alice Faye,
who are students there.
Harvey Wilhite of Prairie City,
former Heppner resident, was
visiting here on Monday.

couple was also given a gift of
money to be used as a down
payment on a trip back to Hol
land for a visit.
In addition to her mother and
father and the sister Mia talked
to Monday night (it was 7:30 am
Tuesday in Holland) she has
three brothers in Holland. Har
ry's home is in Roermond, Hol
land where his parents and three
sisters still live.
The Bongers still are not leg
ally citizens 'of America though
they have completed all their
examinations. In early December
they will have their final hear-
ing and take their citizenship
oaths before circuit judge Wil
liam W Wells.

Donald Slesch who is a radio
operator in the Air Force was a
visitor at the Hugh Salter home
last week. He is a nephew of
Mrs Salter and has been in Ja
pan for four years. He has been
in the service for five years and
will serve five more years. After
a 72 day leave he will be stat
ioned in Florida. He will also
visit his parents in Montana. His
brother Nile Slesch, in the Air
Force stationed at McChord Field
in Washington was also a re
cent visitor at the Salter home.
