Former Resident
Pays First Visit
Here Since Flood
Former residents visiting in
Heppner for several days early
in the week were Mrs Fred Mar
shall of Indianapolis, Indiana,
and Marcus Gunn of Sacramento
California. Mrs Marsholl was ac
companied by her husband.
Mrs Marshall and Mr Gunn
are brother and sister and lived
at Church and Main streets at
the time of the Heppner flood
on June 14, 1903. As the flood
waters were approaching, the
family fled toward the Frank
Gilliam residence. The parents,
Mr and Mrs Alexander Gunn,
were overtaken and drowned at
Church and Gale streets. The
four surviving children were Mrs
Marshall, Mr Gunn, Mary who
now lives in Cambridge, Massa
chusetts, and Washington, D C,
and Gertrude Elizabeth who re
sides in New York City. These
children's paternal grandparents
lived in London, Ontario, Cana
da, and the maternal grandpar
ents lived in Detroit, Michigan.
On Thursday, following the flood
on Sunday, the grandfather in
Detroit communicated with the
mayor of Portland who arranged
to have the children taken there.
Because of flood damage to the
railroad tracks, it was necessary
to drive to Lexington to catch
the train. From Portland the
young Gunns went East and di
vided their childhood between
the grandparents in Detroit and
in London, Ontario. This is Mrs
Marshall's first visit to Heppner
since she left four days after
the flood. Mr Gunn, who is an
officer of the California-Western
States Life Insurance Com
pany, has returned occassionally.
Mrs Marshall stated that their
visit here was made especially
pleasant by the friendliness and
hospitality of the people of the
community.
