tory are not just and reasonable
and should not become perma
nent. This means that the ex
aminer has allowed the railroads
to continue the low rates in
California and Arizona because
of the extensive hauling com
petition hauling meat from the
Mid-West and Texas into Cali
fornia but has denied the rates
into the Pacific Northwest be
cause the railroad have not been
subject to the same truck.compe
tition in that area. Exceptions,
to the examiner's report will be
filed not later than April 30,
1958 with a definite decision
made after that time.
Members of the livestock Com
mittee of the Morrow County
Town and Country Planning
Conference and the Morrow
County Livestock Growers Assoc
iation have recommended that
: these low rates not be allowed
providing eastern grown moat to
be shipped in at a much lower
freight rate than meat moving
from here to the east. It appears
that their efforts in joining with
other organizations of the Pacif
ic Northwest are bearing fruit.
A recent report from USDiA
and Oregon State college indi
cates that this year's US winter
wheat crop may be the fourth
largest on record. As this month
started the condition of the nat
ion's winter wheat fields prom
ised a 1958 harvest of 9tS4 mill
ion bushels. This is fully 6 a
bove last December's forecast
and would be 36 more than
last year's harvest and 13 a
bove the ten year average. A
smaller acreage of wheat land
was placed in the Soil Bank last
fall and farmers seeded a sixth
larger acreage than the fall of
1956. This was true especially in
plains states where weather con
ditions were much improved.
Oregon expects about the same
size harvest as in 1957 but Wash
ington's crop looks to be 7
better.
At a recent meeting of the
executive committee of the Mor
row County Wheat Growers As
sociation there was some discus
sion on the continued infestation
of purple mustard throughout
the county. The first purple mus
tard was found in Morrow coun
ty about 9 years ago. The edu
cation program which followed
encouraging the control of this
weed before its spread further
evidently needs to be re-emphasized.
At the wheat meeting it
was pointed out that the weed
was spreading into new areas
throughout the entire county. In
a check made on Tuesday of this
week infestations were to be pre
valant on many farms. Fortunat
ely the patches are small in
most cases and if identified now,
can be controlled before they
spread. The weed is not easily

livestock Operation
Pointers, Problems
Listed in Bulletin.
A range livestock operation
can be thought of as a meat
factory with problems much like
those of other manufacturing
plants, suggests a now bulletin
published by the Oregon State
college extension service.
Titled, "Ranchers, Ranges, and
Cows." the now bulletin points
out that every rancher is in
business producing something to
sell. As factory manager, the
rancher uses foods as his raw
materials, his herd is his fact
ory, and meat on the hoof Is his
finished product.
Since every rancher is in com
petition with every other ranch
er, he has to got his raw mater
ials as cheaply as possible if
he's to be a success. This is
why range is so important in a
livestock operation, the bulle
tin emphasizes. Range produces
the lowest-cost feed of any used
in the meat factory.
Big problem each rancher fac
es in his business is to have
